About The Coach House

The Coach House is a luxurious retreat where couples or individuals can enjoy a high standard of self-catering accommodation on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. The owners have included all the cosy touches guests want for a comfortable holiday with high-quality furnishings, a log burner, and a deep freestanding bath for soaking after a day of walking the dales. You also have gorgeous views, beautiful footpaths, and cycling routes from your holiday cottage door. The location in Scargill is ideal at any time of the year, being just six miles from Barnard Castle and within reach of the North Pennines, Lake District and the North York Moors.

Do you sometimes feel as if you're on an ever-increasing treadmill? If so, you'll love the opportunity to step off the road to nowhere and onto a trail leading somewhere scenic like Egglestone Abbey, Ravenseat, beside the River Tees, and through Baldersdale to Brown Rigg Moss. With two national parks and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty practically on the doorstep, plus the Lake District within an hour's drive, you will have no trouble finding a cycling route or footpath to suit you. The Pennine Way and Teesdale Way are close to your cottage.

Barnard Castle is a lovely market town in the Durham Dales. As well as supermarkets and other amenities, it has a 12th Century stone castle towering over the Tees Gorge. The castle was owned by Richard III but is now in the care of English Heritage, who also look after Egglestone Abbey and gardens, Bowes Castle, and the Iron Age fortifications at Stanwick. The Bowes Museum is in a spectacular French-style chateau with magnificent gardens that rival its jaw-dropping collections. While you can arrange to have a supermarket delivery of groceries to your cottage after your arrival, we recommend that you make the most of the monthly farmers market and independently owned butcher, greengrocer, bakeries, cafes, bars and restaurants.

Guests who have stayed at The Coach House love how clean, spacious, and comfortable it is. The Coach House is available for bookings all year round and it can be booked on its own or with The Bothy, which sleeps four people and is also on the grounds of Scargill Lodge.

Accommodation Comprises:

The Coach House is a lovely stone holiday cottage with stylish interiors and accommodation all on one level.

  • An open-plan layout, vaulted ceiling, polished concrete floors and large windows ensure the ground floor is always light and welcoming. Although it sleeps two, it has been furnished with additional seating in case you want to have friends over for dinner.
  • Put your feet up on the huge sofa where there is plenty of space for two people to stretch out and watch a film, read or nap. Light the log burner in cold weather and enjoy how it adds to the cosy atmosphere created with an expert choice of colours and soft furnishings.
  • The fitted kitchen is at the other end of the room to the living area, separated by a dining table that seats four people. There is also a breakfast bar with four stools and all the appliances, equipment and utensils necessary to cook and serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.
  • Glass doors open from the living room into the bedroom, furnished with a superking-sized bed and boasting an ensuite with a shower, bath, WC and a handbasin. The second set of glazed doors opens into the garden.

Outside: A patio and pergola provide a shaded area to eat outdoors. There is parking outside the cottage.

Additional information: Utilities, WiFi, bed linen and bath towels are included. The owner can also arrange extras such as beauty treatments, food and wine deliveries, dine in options and yoga. Smoking and pets are not allowed.
