The Shires is a welcoming holiday cottage in the quiet village of Osbaldwick, close to York and its many sights and attractions. It is a wonderful choice for couples or small families who want to enjoy the wonders of this ancient city without staying in the city centre. The cottage has spacious mature gardens and is on a cul-de-sac with no passing traffic, so there is nothing to disturb your sleep or interrupt the sound of birdsong as you sit in the sunshine with your morning cup of tea. The two-bedroom self-catering cottage sleeps three people and is within walking distance of cafes, a supermarket, and the Derwent Arms pub.
York is a fantastic holiday destination. No matter where your interests lie, you'll find a wide choice of attractions, activities and events all year round. The Shires is just three miles from York's city centre. There is a handy Park and Ride service a short drive or easy walk from the cottage, leaving every 10 minutes. There is also an excellent cycleway leading to the River Ouse in the heart of the ancient city.
Although York boasts incredible historical buildings, these are not kept behind ropes and glass to only be seen from a distance. York is a living, breathing wonder where you can walk along medieval walls, admire the majesty of its stunning gothic Minster, picnic in the grounds of the castle, and go shopping in The Shambles - a medieval lane lined with shops adding to the 14th Century charm. Romans, Vikings and the Normans have invaded York. A walk to Clifford's Tower gives a wonderful elevated view of the city's layout, showing how it grew and spread over the centuries. York also has a wealth of opportunities for shopping and eating, theatre and nightlife.
Once you've had your fill of the city's sights and attractions, turn your attention to the surrounding countryside. The Howard Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and Castle Howard are an easy drive from the cottage, while the North York Moors National Park and the Yorkshire Coast are around an hour from the cottage. There are market towns, friendly villages, country walks and miles of cycling.
The Shires is dog-friendly and available for holidays all year round. It's a wonderful home-away-from-home where you can enjoy everything York and the surrounding area offers.
