About The Old Apothecary

The Old Apothecary brims with warmth, charm and a touch of whimsy. This quirky holiday home is in the historic heart of Thirsk, just opposite the museum and a few steps from the charming house where James Herriot lived and wrote the books that made people all around the world fall in love with this picturesque market town and the spectacular surrounding landscape. The self-catering property is ideal for couples or individuals who love being able to wander around the shops and market square, deciding on a whim to dine out or stop at the pub or hole up in front of the log burner with the soft lighting and eclectic collection of artefacts from around the world.

Thirsk is a wonderful place for a holiday. It's exactly as you'd expect from watching All Creatures Great and Small - a proper community with excellent amenities and a warm Yorkshire welcome. As well as pubs, cafes and museums, Thirsk has a twice-weekly market on Monday and Saturday, and a farmers' market on the first Sunday of the month. It also has one of the oldest cinemas in the country, run entirely by volunteers, showing all the latest films, as well as a Rural Arts Centre, definitely worth a visit. More amenities are a few miles away in the towns of Northallerton and Ripon.

Walkers, cyclists and mountain bikers love Thirsk for its proximity to the North York Moors, the Yorkshire Dales, and the magnificent beaches of the Yorkshire coast. Orientate yourself with a walk around town and beside Cod Beck, or stretch your legs in the Hambleton Hills, along the Cleveland Way or Swale Way, and take time to appreciate the views from Sutton Bank, which was described by James Herriot as "the finest view in England". Staithes, Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay are around an hour's drive, while the seaside resort town of Scarborough is about 20 minutes further. Alternatively, spend a day shopping and sightseeing in the ancient city of York, just over half an hour from Thirsk by car or train.

You can do everything or nothing when you stay at The Old Apothecary - the choice is yours completely. Holiday bookings are available all year round with short breaks and longer stays possible, depending on availability.
