Wrexham - the gateway to Wales

The town of Wrexham itself is one of the main highlights in the area. With its old architecture and small time feel, the town is very welcoming to visitors to the region. The National Trust property of Erddig Hall lies just outside of Wrexham town and is a great example of a 17th century stately home with splendid gardens and surrounding countryside. Visitors can tour the house with its majestic rooms and artworks, walk around the tranquil gardens which contain a Victorian era parterre and survey the estate buildings that are scattered around the area.

Every Monday the town of Wrexham hosts a local market where people can purchase products and food sourced from within the general vicinity. Indeed, shopping in Wrexham is a fantastic experience in itself and it has a real traditional feel to it with the small independent stores and quaint streets that make up the town. Most of the centre is pedestrianised further adding to the experience and peaceful nature of the town.

The Clywedog Valley located in the county is a perfect nature spot. It features miles of nature walks and cycling trails where everyone can enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the Welsh countryside. Native wildlife and birdlife can be seen around the area and it provides great picnic spots with a scenic view, in addition to relaxing streams and waterfalls. Due to the industrial nature of the area, and Wales in general, mining has long played an important role in the economy and every day life of the people here. The Minera Lead Mines provide an insight into the importance of the trade to the area and allows visitors see first hand the mines and the equipment used. Mining started in the area hundreds of years ago and even though the shafts have long been quiet, they are a great educational and cultural experience.

Wrexham is a county that is maybe not as well known as other parts of Wales, however this can often be to its benefit. Rather than having large, busy tourist attractions, it instead has smaller, more welcoming and quieter experiences for those looking for a relaxing break. The town of Wrexham is a charming place with a traditional outlook and for visitors who want to experience real Wales and not a high street filled with the same store chains, this is one of the best places to do so. Small towns and glorious countryside make up the county of Wrexham and such is the small size of the region, you can easily do both in the one day.
