About The Tryst

The Tryst presents a rare opportunity to stay in a magnificent Grade I listed holiday cottage in the Suffolk village of Lavenham, a short walk from the historic Swan Hotel. Even in what is considered the best-preserved medieval village in England, this 15th-Century property is a treasure, boasting original period features that include hand-carved beams, an inglenook fireplace, and a walled knot garden. There is space for five people to sleep in three beautifully appointed bedrooms, with the potential for an extra child if required. Despite its considerable age and pedigree, the owners have incorporated modern comforts, such as underfloor heating, into the cottage, making it a wonderful choice for couples, families and friends.

The beauty of Lavenham will have you in raptures. Its importance as a Wool Town is evident in the quality of its buildings, many of which date from Tudor times, with more than 300 being Grade I or Grade II listed. The Tryst is opposite Lavenham Guildhall, recognisable to fans of the Harry Potter films as the house where Harry lived with his family in Godric's Hollow. Far from being a living museum, Lavenham is as vibrant as ever, with wonderful pubs, tea rooms, restaurants, and food shops to make self-catering a joy whether or not you spend time in the kitchen. Indulge in a spa treatment, afternoon tea, or a few hours browsing boutiques. Take a guided walk around the village and Lavenham Airfield, book tickets for one of the live music events hosted by the church, or spend a happy morning at the monthly Farmer's Market, which features the best from more than 30 local producers. The Lavenham Literary Festival runs every November, while the decorations and annual Christmas fair entice even more visitors.

Places to visit near Lavenham include Bury St Edmunds. Bury has a busy Wednesday market, magnificent ruins of a cathedral and abbey, and Suffolk's only restaurant with a highly-coveted Michelin star. The racing epicentre of Newmarket is 24 miles from the cottage, while Ipswich is even closer. The historic university buildings and the cathedral of Cambridge are around an hour away, as are the beaches at Felixstowe and Harwich. Lavenham is the starting point for many memorable countryside walks, including those through Lavenham Woodland and to Long Melford.

The Tryst is so special that it is almost a destination in its own right and will certainly be a gilded highlight of your holiday.

Accommodation Comprises:

The Tryst is a wonderful cottage where contemporary comforts blend harmoniously with period features to create a space where you can relax and appreciate the rare opportunity to stay somewhere so special.

Downstairs:

  • You'll find it hard to resist lighting the log burner in all but the warmest weather. Not because the cottage is cold - far from it, with central and underfloor heating, but because it looks so pretty in the original inglenook fireplace. Comfortable sofas and armchairs provide ample seating for you to settle back with your favourite drink and good company or a gripping book or to watch the Freeview and Netflix channels on the TV.
  • Even breakfast cereal feels special when eaten in the dining room, with oak beams and shutters, deep-red walls, and antique dining table and chairs. It's the perfect setting for a romantic dinner or a celebratory meal with family and friends.
  • Country kitchen charm is a stylish foil to some of the more richly decorated rooms in the cottage. A scrubbed pine table sits on terracotta tiles that contrast nicely with a cream Aga, painted Shaker-style cabinets and a ceramic butler's sink. The window overlooks the walled knot garden, and there is a doorway into the rear porch.
  • Oak-framed glass doors open into the garden from the downstairs bedroom. It's furnished with a single bed and a chest of drawers, with a truckle bed that you can use to accommodate an additional child if required. Please let the owner know when booking if you will need the extra bed.
  • Contrasting with the age of the cottage, a modern wet room provides a shower, WC and a handbasin.

Upstairs:

  • Climb the stairs to the first-floor landing, off which lead two more lovely bedrooms and a bathroom.
  • You'll feel like royalty falling asleep under the chandelier in the master bedroom. The window overlooks the historic Guildhall building (Harry Potter's House) and has a brass double bed and a chest of drawers.
  • Open the curtains to views of the garden in the second double bedroom, furnished in a chic French style with windows on three sides.
  • After a busy day, a relaxing soak in a rolltop bath will be heaven for your tired muscles. The bathroom also has a WC and a handbasin.

Outside: You'll love spending time in the sheltered walled knot garden, eating meals or enjoying the simple pleasure of taking time over a cup of tea in the sunshine. The street outside the cottage has unrestricted parking.

Additional Information: Utilities, WiFi, bed linen and bath towels are all included. Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome by arrangement. Smoking is not permitted.
