About Old Coach House

The Old Coach House hosts couples and small families for self-catering walking holidays in the beautiful region between the Suffolk and Norfolk borders. The holiday cottage sleeps four people in two bedrooms and is in the pretty village of Occold, eight miles from Diss. All of the amenities you need are within easy reach, including the Beaconsfield Arms pub, affectionately known as "the Beaky" by locals. There are beautiful places to walk to from the doorstep of this charming barn conversion, including to the nearby town Eye, two miles away. The owners take pride in offering a very warm welcome to guests all year round. An enclosed garden to enjoy in summer and a warming log burner makes the cottage equally lovely in cold weather.

Occold has a traditional atmosphere lost by so many communities over the years, with community life focused around the village green, church and the pub. Recorded as "Acholt" in the Domesday Book, the village's name means "oak thicket" referring to the native woodland that thrived here before being cleared centuries ago for farming. A five-mile circular walk from the village hall car park goes through meadows, alongside fields, and across Benningham Green to Benningham Hall. You can walk or cycle to Eye to find everything you'll need for your self-catering stay, including a busy Wednesday market in the town hall and a smaller one on Friday, homewares and gift shops, and a chocolatier and cafe where you can refuel yourself for the walk back to the cottage.

The Norfolk market town of Diss is eight miles and around a 20-minute drive from the cottage. It's bigger than Eye and has a mainline train station and a picturesque mere as well as places to eat, drink and shop. There is a wider variety of shops and attractions 35 minutes away in Ipswich or 40 minutes away in Bury St Edmunds. Local attractions include the incredible Wurlitzer and other instruments at The Grange Musical Collection in Palgrave, Bressingham Steam Museum and Gardens, Shorelands Wildlife Gardens, and the 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum. The Suffolk Coast and beaches like Aldeburgh and Southwold are under an hour's drive, offering even more choice for fun-filled days out.
