Learn more about Staffordshire

The countryside area of Cannock Chase is located in Staffordshire and is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The park contains many woodland trails, including a challenging cross-country bike trail, as well as a remarkably diverse wildlife population. The area is popular with birdwatchers as it is home to many rare species of birds including Skylark and Woodlark. Many museums and memorials are also located within Cannock Chase and the area is sometimes used as an open air venue for live music.

Whilst the major part of the Peak District National Park sits in Derbyshire, part of it also lies in Staffordshire. The countryside region is a popular area for a vast range of outdoor activities, including cycling, climbing and walking.

Staffordshire contains a huge number of notable historic attractions. These include Lichfield Cathedral, a unique medieval cathedral in the small city of Lichfield; Shugborough Hall, a historic estate near Cannock Chase that includes a working model farm; and the Wall Roman Site (also known as Letocetum), a former Roman settlement in the village of Wall.

The county is also home to two of the UK's most popular theme parks. Alton Towers is located near the village of Alton and was the most visited UK theme park in 2012. Open between mid-March and November every year, it provides a great day out for the whole family. Staffordshire's other major theme park, Drayton Manor, is situated near the town of Tamworth and is also open from mid-March through to early November, but occasionally opens for selected days outside of the season and features a zoo that is open all year round.

Several major towns and cities can be found in Staffordshire, each offering their own unique attractions. The city of Stoke-on-Trent has numerous live music venues and theatres, as well as notable museums such as the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery. Newcastle-under-Lyme is home to several award-winning parks and gardens, a traditional town market that has been in operation since the 12th century and the New Vic Theatre, the first arena theatre built in Europe. The county town of Stafford features numerous ancient buildings, including St Chad's Church, which can be traced back to the 12th century, Stafford Castle and the Ancient High House, an Elizabethan residence that now houses a museum.

While easily overlooked, Staffordshire is packed with enough historic attractions, entertainment options and remarkable areas of natural beauty to easily fill any visitor's itinerary and may leave travellers considering a second visit to the area to fully explore what Staffordshire has to offer.
