About Glyn Mawr Barn

Glyn Mawr Barn is the perfect holiday cottage for families and friends who can't sit still. Although the self-catering holiday property, which is only 10 minutes from Bala and boasts stunning views over the lake and mountains, is extremely comfortable, the lure of the landscape will prove too much, and you'll find yourself eager for adventure. Days will be filled with walking, mountain biking, fishing, and climbing, with plenty of adrenaline sports available for good measure. You'll fall onto the sofa with happy exhaustion every evening, with the experience of this holiday sustaining you long after you leave. Glyn Mawr Barn has been refurbished to a very high standard and sleeps six people in three bedrooms with a sofa bed to accommodate a further two guests and additional bedding for children. There are no near neighbours or passing traffic - just peace, privacy, and sensational 360-degree views.

Snowdonia is the adventure capital of Britain. The historic town of Bala is at its heart, providing all of the amenities you need for a comfortable self-catering holiday together with a clear sense of community and a strong Welsh identity. Everyone speaks English, but most locals use Welsh as their first language, and to hear it so widely spoken adds to the magic of the area. It may appear tame on the surface, but the landscape around here is wonderfully wild, with Bala Lake (Llyn Tegid) filled from either side by the Rivers Dee and Tryweryn. Sailing, wild swimming, canoeing and fishing are all readily accessible on the biggest natural lake in Wales.

The walks around Bala and the surrounding area known as Penllyn will take your literal and figurative breath away. There is a footpath to suit everyone, whether you want a mountain trail or a riverside stroll. There are trails for families, explorers, and people interested in history, great food, and spectacular views. There's a tourist information point at the leisure centre in Bala. Mountain biking is another favourite way to enjoy the mountains and the lakes. The Aran and the Arenig mountain ranges have 14 and 13 peaks above 2,000 metres, or you could tackle some of the 24 peaks of the Berwyn range that starts west of Bala or at one of the region's mountain bike and downhill centres. Road cyclists are equally spoiled for choice with challenging mountain passes that descend into sweeping roads with incredible views.

Other activities to enjoy during your stay include whitewater rafting and kayaking, go-karting, golf and spa days, and attractions like King Arthur's Labyrinth and Corris Slate Mine. Take a ride on the Bala Railway or drive an hour to Llanberris and the Snowdon Mountain Railway. Bounce Below, Zip World and Surf Snowdonia are also within an hour's drive for fun-filled days out.

Location (Snowdonia)

Accommodation Comprises:

The owner of Glyn Mawr fell in love with what was a dilapidated stone barn in the middle of nowhere, transforming it into a stylish holiday home using environmentally friendly techniques and materials that include sheep's wool insulation and renewable energy. It sits gently in the landscape, giving guests sensational views and an unforgettable experience.

  • Open plan living/dining room and kitchen with vaulted ceilings, exposed beams, and windows on both sides that fill the room with natural light and frame jaw-dropping views. The huge stone fireplace with a log burner is a focal point of the living area, which has three comfortable sofas (including a double sofa bed) and a TV.
  • Hand-crafted kitchen with a modern six-burner range cooker and a kitchen handcrafted from locally felled Welsh oak. It's very well equipped for self-catering with plates, glasses and cutlery for eight people, plus quality appliances and utensils.
  • Master bedroom with a kingsize bed, bedside tables with reading lights, and incredible views through French doors. As with the living areas, the decor in the bedrooms is simple and uncluttered, letting the views and the natural building materials like stone, limestone and oak, take centre stage.
  • Two further bedrooms furnished with a double bed, bedside tables and reading lights.
  • Shower room with limestone tiled shower, WC and a handbasin.
  • Bathroom with a shower over the bath, WC and a handbasin.

Outside: The cottage is reached via a steep lane and has no near neighbours. There is lots of outdoor space to admire extensive views of the lake and mountains with a seating and barbecue area and parking for four cars.

Additional Information: Utilities, bed linen and bath towels are all included. A travel cot (no bedding) and a highchair are available. The cottage has WiFi at rural speeds. Short breaks are possible, depending on availability. Pets and smoking are not permitted. A hot tub can be hired from a local company at an additional charge. Please note that parties are not allowed and the owner does not accept groups of under 25 year olds.
