Dog Friendly Snowdonia

The best way to enjoy the awe-inspiring landscapes of Snowdonia is on foot. Anyone who is up for a challenge should walk to the summit of Snowdon, the tallest mountain in England and Wales. Whilst there are many routes to the top, the 9-mile round trip up the Llanberis path is the easiest for dogs (and humans!) who aren’t seasoned mountain climbers. If you would rather enjoy the mountains without going up them, the views from the lakeside walk at the foot of Snowdon are priceless. The 5-mile walk around Llyn Padarn includes ancient woodlands, a former quarry and numerous bird spotting opportunities. After your walk pop into the National Slate Museum to learn about the history of the quarries.

If you want to explore the mountains without embarking on a full days hiking, the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway is a fantastic way to travel over 40 miles through breath-taking mountain scenery. Stop off at one of the many small stations to stretch your legs and explore this stunning National Park before hopping back on the next train.

As beautiful as they are, there is more to Snowdonia than mountains. Enjoy cascading waterfalls and crystal clear lakes as you explore the trails at Gywdir Forest or learn about one of the famous Welsh folk tales as you follow in the footsteps of a legendary hound on a walk to Gelert’s grave in Beddgelert. If you are looking for a sea view head to the North Wales Coastal Path. Tackle one of the short Summit Trails to the top of the Great Orme, or take the dog friendly tram to the top from the seaside resort of Llandudno. As well as admiring the phenomenal views as far as Liverpool Bay and Anglesey you can take a trip back in time as you walk through the tunnels of the Great Orme Bronze Age Copper Mines.

With 200 miles of coastline in Snowdonia there is ample opportunity to get those tails wagging and catch some waves, build a sand castle and play a game of fetch in the sea. The wide sandy beach at the traditional seaside town of Barmouth is a popular spot for surfers, families and dogs. Or combine a day at the award-winning dog friendly beach at Harlech with a trip to the castle that is perched high up on a rock overlooking the dunes below. Watersports enthusiasts will be pleased to know that dogs are welcome to join you on a canoe, kayak or paddleboard to explore the lakes and rivers of Snowdonia at Bala Adventure and Watersports Centre. Or those looking for a family day out should head to Greenwood Family Park for an action-packed day of forest activities and adventures. Four legged friends on leads are welcome throughout the park so your dog can come too!

The combination of the stunning coastal and mountainous landscape and the large number of dog friendly cottages to rent makes Snowdonia the perfect playground for both two and four legged walkers, explorers and adventurers.
