About Capel Mawr

Capel Mawr is a huge property with space for 11 guests in five sumptuous bedrooms. The duplex apartment is on the top two floors of a converted chapel in the centre of Criccieth, with a private entrance and a location within walking distance of shops, cafes and hospitable pubs like the relaxed and friendly Bryn Hir Arms. This seaside town is perfect for a fantastic holiday with your extended family or friends, and staying in Capel Mawr keeps you central to all of the fun.

Criccieth has everything you expect from a stylish seaside resort, except for the attitude. It's on the spectacular Llyn Peninsula which boasts breathtaking views in every season. With not one but two Blue Flag beaches, there's always space to stretch out and enjoy the sunshine. There's a long promenade along the coast, and a clifftop castle separates the beaches. A warming Gulf Stream current not only makes the temperature warmer than you might expect for Wales - so mild that some locals swim all year round - but it also attracts dolphins and porpoises.

The Llyn Peninsula is about to become your new favourite holiday destination. Beaches near Criccieth include Morfa Bychan, Black Rock Sands, Afon Wen, and Carreg Wen. Spend a day wandering around Portmeirion's colourful Italianate buildings, admire the might and majesty of Harlech Castle. The beaches on Llyn's southern coast like Criccieth - those facing Cardigan Bay - are typically calm and sheltered. Beaches on the north coast face the Irish Sea and are ideal for windsurfing, kite surfing and other adrenaline-fuelled watersports.

Staying in Criccieth means you're within easy reach of Snowdonia National Park, just over half an hour from the Snowdon Mountain Railway and close to breathtaking walks and exciting mountain bike trails. You can fish, play golf, kayak and sail, go horseriding or sit back in a seat on one of the vintage carriages of the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway and enjoy the spectacular scenery that is characteristic of this part of Wales.

Capel Mawr is available all year round, with short breaks possible depending on availability. Even if you only have a few days to escape and spend time with your friends or family - maybe a weekend to celebrate a milestone birthday or an annual catch up over Christmas - you'll find a very warm welcome waiting for you.

Location (Snowdonia)

Accommodation Comprises:

Capel Mawr is a unique property with two floors of original features that include tall windows that let in lots of natural light, and a layout that is designed with socialising in mind.

The accommodation is on the first and second floors of a converted Welsh chapel with a private entrance.

First Floor:

  • High ceilings, hardwood floors and bold colours are a signature feature of the former chapel, especially the open-plan living space which has a living area, dining space and modern kitchen.
  • Leather sofas, a gas "log-effect" burner and a TV make the perfect spot to flop down with a tub of popcorn and put on a movie.
  • Linger over breakfast or go to town with the decorations and use the dining space as the focal point for your birthday or Christmas celebrations. The table and chairs were crafted specifically for the room, making every diner feel like royalty even if they're tucking into nothing fancier than eggs and toast.
  • It's easy to cook delicious meals in the fitted kitchen which is equipped with everything you need to cook and serve up to 11 hungry guests. As with so much of the furniture in the chapel, the kitchen is also bespoke and crafted to suit the house and the needs of its guests.
  • Three of the five bedrooms are on this level, including a double room with a kingsize bed which has been crafted from church pews.
  • Family/triple room with a kingsize and a single bed to sleep up to three people. This room has an ensuite with a freestanding slipper bath, separate shower, WC and a jack-and-jill handbasin.
  • Twin bedroom with two full-sized single beds, plenty of storage and high windows that overlook Criccieth's High Street.

Second Floor:

  • An ornate iron spiral staircase leads to the upper floor where there are two further bedrooms. One of them is a huge double with a super-kingsized bed made from church pews and an ensuite WC with a handbasin. Multi-aspect windows overlook the church and the beach.
  • Twin bedroom with two single beds.

Outside: The property has a patio with garden furniture where guests can enjoy meals and socialise outside in good weather. There is off-street parking for two cars, with further free parking across the street.

Additional Information: All utilities, WiFi, sheets and bath towels are included. Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome through prior arrangement. A cot (no bedding), highchair and stairgate are all available on request. Smoking is not permitted. Sorry but no hen or stag parties.
