About Hardgatehead Cottage

Hardgatehead Cottage sleeps up to six guests and provides a high standard of eco-friendly holiday accommodation that is a peaceful retreat at any time of the year - in the summer you can sit on the decking area and take in the wonderful view and in the winter curl up in front of the log burner and watch the flames flicker.

Ideally placed, the cottages nestles amongst Peeblesshire countryside, within easy reach of West Linton village (just one mile) in the Scottish Borders, and under twenty miles from the City of Edinburgh.

There are plenty of things to see and do in the Scottish Borders and around Edinburgh. For those looking to get out and about and have fun, there are fabulous countryside walks with historic architecture to see along the way, or for those seeking adventure, Glentress offers excellent mountain biking. You can also book the ultimate in adventure and a trip on a hot-air-balloon. Alternatively, stay put and enjoy the opportunities locally including fishing, horse riding, golf, walking and bike riding. There are a great choice of walks in the immediate area allowing you to explore it by foot and you are assured peace and privacy with the nearest neighbour being one mile away! Simply relax in this tranquil scenic setting.

Whether you are a historian, a whisky lover, a theatre buff, or an all round explorer, there's plenty of choice if you want to get out and about during your holiday with attractions including: Rosslyn Chapel; Linlithgow Palace - the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots; Dawyck Botanic Gardens; Glenkinchie Distillery; Falkirk Wheel; New Lanark World Heritage Site; Scottish Mining Museum and the enchanting City of Edinburgh with its world class shopping, cobbled streets, castle, vast selection of eating establishments and much more.

Location (Scottish Borders)

Accommodation compromises:

  • Master king-size en-suite bedroom with shower room and a patio door providing beautiful views and access outside.
  • Twin bedroom which provides flexible sleeping with a bed that can also become a double (this room also has a patio door).
  • Sleeping loft, accessed by its own stairs which has two single beds and provides a great place for children with a Velux window providing views.
  • Large entrance hall where there is a cupboard with plenty of space for outdoor clothing etc and a smaller cupboard with washing machine.
  • Spacious family bathroom with roll top bath, wash basin and WC.
  • Lovely light and airy open plan living area with: lounge offering comfy seating, flat screen television and wood burning stove; stylish kitchen with electric oven, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and dining table with chairs.

Outside: A Gas barbeque and garden furniture are provided on the decking area which is covered. Off-road parking is available for three cars and access to the cottage is up a farm track which is not tarmac so it may not be ideal for very low cars, but quite satisfactory for the average family car. There is an outside area for drying items and covered parking where there is storage (which can be locked) for bikes and outdoor gear (there are also some bikes available for guest's use). The storage shed has insulation and is pretty warm, and also the place where the wood pellet boiler is located (a good place for dogs to dry if wet). A sink and also a hose are provided for washing down equipment and there is a pulley for drying damp clothes. A walking area for dogs is in the process of being constructed, which will allow them to stretch their legs off lead when livestock are grazing the fields surrounding the cottage.

Additional information: Facilities include washing machine/dishwasher, two televisions with DVD players and stereo with iPod docking station. Underfloor heating. A cot and highchair can be provided as required. One dog is welcome providing they are are well behaved and not allowed on furniture or left alone at Hardgatehead Cottage at any time (speak to the owner's about more than one dog). Grazing is available in a field to the rear of the cottage which is securely fenced - perfect for those with a horse. Alternatively there is stabling nearby (ten minute walk). Extra charges apply for horses and also dogs.

Eco credentials: Sitting in a Site of Special Scientific Interest, Hardgatehead Cottage was constructed incoorporating a wealth of eco-friendly principles. The day to day running of the cottage follows these very same principles offering eco-friendly facilities that include recycling and composting, low-efficiency appliances and a wood burning stove and wood-pellet boiler for heating and electricity.
