St John's Holiday Cottage easily sleeps 12 guests in four bedrooms (plus an extra 4 on two sofa beds), and it is as comfortable for large or extended families as it is for smaller groups who appreciate the extra space. The pretty 17th-Century cottage in the rural village of Ryhall has been sympathetically restored to offer 4-star accommodation within walking distance of two pubs: The Wicked Witch and The Green Dragon.
Rutland is a tiny county in the East Midlands which remains beautifully untouched by the ravages of the 20th-Century. Many of the original Georgian stone buildings remain, giving the towns and villages a peaceful, timeless appeal. Being close to the centre of Ryhall means guests at St John's Holiday Cottage can walk to the village shop and square, pubs, church and an excellent butcher. The charming sight of ducks bobbing in the river will encourage you to take your time as you stroll around the village.
Exploring on foot is an excellent way to get a feel for the landscape. There is a lovely walk to the nearby village of Tolthorpe where the open-air theatre hosts a season of Shakespeare plays every summer. Burghley House is also nearby, while the county town of Stamford is only two miles away and easily reached by bike or car if you choose not to walk.
Other places to explore include Oakham, Uppingham and Oundle, and it is simple to plan a fun day out at local attractions such as Sacrewell Farm Park or Rutland Water with its beach, Aqua Park (the largest in the country!), nature reserves and fantastic water sports (including Britain's finest inland sailing). Opportunities for horse riding, cycling, rock climbing, sailing, bird watching, fishing and windsurfing are all within reach.
Rutland is one of England's best-kept secrets yet it offers so much for visitors. The central yet quiet location of St Johns Holiday Cottage is perfect for celebrating a special occasion or enjoying a memorable holiday everyone will love.
