Dumfries Area

Escape to the market town of Dumfries in South West Scotland, nicknamed the ‘Queen of the South’ for its beautiful surrounding countryside and close proximity to the mouth of the River Nith which opens onto the Solway Firth. Its location makes it ideal for exploring the coastline with its sandy beaches and rocky inlets to the Galloway Hills as well as the Ae forest offering superb walking and cycling on the famous 7stanes trails.

The famous poet Robert Burns moved to Dumfries in 1791 and stayed until his death five years later, writing his most famous poem the ‘Tam o’Shanter’ whilst residing close to the town centre. Even today there are remnants to remind us of Robert Burns time in the town with a number of historical places for all tourist to visit. Also, it was whilst working in Dumfries that JM Barrie befriended a local family and it was their adventures which inspired him to create ‘Peter Pan’ a favourite character that all children still relate to this day.
