The cottage is 200 years old and adjoins the owner's farmhouse. Sorry, no under 5's. Dogs and horses welcome.

Details 

East Harwood Farm Cottage near Timberscombe is a pretty cottage with countryside views from every window at the front of the house. The property is stone built and is attached at one corner to the owners farmhouse next door. The farm has a unique vantage point across the valley, with barely another property in sight. Very quiet and secluded.

Sorry, but we are unable to accept children under 5 years, as this is a working farm with ponds and livestock. We also  do NOT accept smokers.

Sleeps up to 4 guests in two bedrooms - note, low occupancy discount applies only if only one bedroom is used.

Bed linen and towels are provided.

Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome by prior arrangement and for a supplementary fee of £15 per dog. We suggest you keep an eye on your dog if they are likely to go exploring. There is access to the moors via bridle paths. For those bringing horses, it is a 20 minute hack to the moors.

If you wish to bring your horse on holiday with you there are 3 stables with rubber matting available to rent, for £20 per horse per night, with one bale of shavings included per horse. Sorry, no turnout.

To comply with the owner's insurance policy there is no access to the farm itself or the owner's garden. Please note that guests are not insured when outside the cottage.

The entrance to the property is via the hall with space for coats and boots, etc. Then straight into the living room which has a wood-burning stove for cosy evenings on the sofa. The dining table comfortably seats four and is by the entrance to the kitchen. The kitchen is equipped with a large electric range oven and hob, microwave, cookware, cutlery, crockery, glasses, etc. and an under-counter fridge with a small freezer compartment. Some non-perishable items will be provided, such as salt, pepper, oil, etc.

Upstairs there is one double bedroom with King sized bed, and one twin room. The bathroom comprises a bath with shower over, toilet and handbasin. The 2nd TV is there in the King sized bed room.

Electricity and heating costs are included in the price of your accommodation. Central heating is fitted throughout the property and there is a wood-burner in the living room for winter use. One basket of logs and some kindling will be provided. Further logs can be purchased on site from the owners if required.

Bed linen and towels are provided. Please bring outdoor/beach towels if you wish to take them with you on day trips.

Up to two dogs are welcome by prior arrangement, for a supplement of £15 per dog. Please do not allow your dogs on the furniture or upstairs.

Wifi is available, but given this is a rural area, speeds are typically slow. There is poor mobile coverage at the cottage itself, with some from EE and Vodafone. 

There is no washing machine at the property, but the owners will do a load for any guests staying for a week or more.

Sorry: No children under 5, as this is a farm with ponds and livestock. Guests with electric cars can plug into the existing domestic supply.

The property is approached via a 3/4 mile private drive. 

There is a patio area directly outside the cottage (not enclosed) with a table and chairs for enjoying a drink or soaking up the view.  In summer there is also a private picnic area by the lower barn, which gets sunshine until early evening.

The lower barn has room for up to 3 horses in stables with rubber mats, with feed room, wash rack and more. 

For insurance reasons, guests are asked to keep to the driveway, from which a number of footpaths can be accessed. One leads up onto the moors and Dunkery Beacon, while another leads down into the valley. There are several options for walking directly from the door.
NB Please note that guests are not insured for injury when outside the cottage.

The village of Timberscombe is approx 1 mile from the cottage. The local pub currently does not serve food, but is dog and family friendly.

Parking

Please park as close to the cottage as you can to unload, and then re-park by the railings. This is to make it easier for horses to pass.

There are a number of excellent pubs and restaurants in in the area. A full list is available in the cottage.
Among our favourite pubs are the Luttrell Arms in Dunster, and the Royal Oak in Luxborough.

Reeves is a well-known top quality restaurant in Dunster, and Woods wine bar in Dulverton (30 mins drive) is well worth the journey. Thongdam is a great Thai restaurant in Dulverton. All of these are best booked in advance.

The Exmoor Inn in Simonsbath does a first class Sunday lunch, with food sourced from the surrounding estate.
Exmoor provides some of the best walking in the South-West. Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on the moors, can be reached directly from the cottage. Otherwise there are many walks in secluded wooded valleys, or along the cliff-tops. Many end up at wonderful tea shops. 

Horner Wood nature reserve is famous for its Pied Flycatchers and range of lichens. The owner can provide local advice on bird-watching.

During the summer children can enjoy a trip on the West Somerset steam railway, crabbing at the harbour in Minehead or Porlock Weir, or maybe even a boat trip to Lundy island in the Bristol channel to see Puffins. (May to July).

Lynton can be reached via its famous cliff railway.

A visit to Dunster Castle (NT) is a must. Special tours take visitors to inaccessible parts of the Castle. The grounds and the Water Mill are also worth a visit. 

Fishing trips can be arranged from Minehead, and there are several stables for those who enjoy a hack across the moors. Minehead has a golf course.

Wimbleball Lake provides windsurfing and sailing, and is less than 30 minutes away.


The walks are too numerous to list individually.

But among our favourites are the walk from the cottage to Webber's Post, along the river at Tarr Steps (begin and end at the tea-shop/pub), down the East Lynn to Water's Meet (another tea shop), and along the cliffs at Countisbury (start at the Blueball Inn).

As for beaches, dogs are allowed at Blue Anchor bay, which has a doggy-friendly cafe called Driftwood. 
Most of Dunster beach is open to dogs the year round. This is a mixture of sand, shingle, and mud at low tide.

Minehead beach - known as the Strand - is partly sandy, but closed to dogs from March until September.

The best beaches for surfing, swimming and sandcastles are further west in North Devon.
