West Lodge offers the rare opportunity to sleep in one of the historic gatehouses in the grounds of Picton Castle. The Grade II listed cottage sleeps up to four people in two bedrooms and is perfect for small families or couples. In addition to the fantastic period features and a high standard of accommodation, guests enjoy extras that include free access to the castle gardens and a free tour of the castle.
Picton Castle is one of the most impressive stately homes in Wales, and certainly one of the finest in Pembrokeshire. It dates from the 1200s with subsequent extensions and improvements over the centuries to make it the refined beauty it is today. The grounds are as impressive as the house and have a walled garden, rare plant collections, woodland walks and an adventure playground - something for everyone. Also within the castle grounds is an excellent restaurant and deli where you can have lunch and afternoon tea as well as pick up a freshly prepared meal to heat up in the cottage for dinner. There is the Welsh Owl Garden, with 26 different species of owls and other birds, and the challenging but fun Mansion of Mystery Escape Rooms. There can't be many other self-catering cottages with so much on the doorstep!
The cottage is close to Haverfordwest, and there is plenty to do outside of the castle grounds. Haverfordwest sits on the Western Cleddau river and is the biggest town of note in Pembrokeshire. In addition to a busy Friday market, the town has a castle which now houses a museum and art gallery, and a wealth of places to eat and drink. Spend fun-filled days at the seaside, exploring Pembrokeshire's spectacular beaches and walking along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. Book a ticket on a specialist wildlife watching trip to see the seals and puffins of Skomer Island, or head inland and mountain bike through the Preseli Hills.
West Lodge can be booked independently or together with East Lodge, which has a similar layout and also sleeps up to four guests. Please see the owner's website for details.
