The Stocking Mill is a beautiful property in the lovely village of Ashford in the Water. The Grade II listed cottage, which was built as a stocking mill 200 years ago has been skillfully restored to provide luxuriously comfortable self-catering accommodation so that you can fully relax and enjoy your stay. It’s a favourite romantic getaway for couples who love the king sized bed and fireplace in the master bedroom, while a second double bedroom gives the flexibility to sleep up to four with ease.
The Bulls Head, an excellent pub that’s a favourite with locals and visitors, is a short walk away, as is the Ashford Arms. For a truly special meal, why not try the Restaurant at Riverside House. It overlooks the famous Sheepwash Bridge that has spanned the River Wye since the 1600s and is a Grade II Listed Scheduled Ancient Monument. Ashford in the Water also benefits from a fantastic delicatessen and grocery store where you can buy delectable goodies for a memorable picnic or a home-cooked meal.
Bakewell is a few minutes’ drive or a pleasant walk from The Stocking Mill. It is home to the Bakewell Pudding and, while there are a number of good bakeries selling it, the Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop on The Square claims to have the original recipe. In addition to a moderately sized supermarket, Bakewell has a good variety of pubs and restaurants, as well as a range of independent shops. There is a fantastic farmers’ market held on the last Saturday of the month, and a weekly market every Monday.
The spa town of Buxton is a 15-minute drive away. Its popularity with the Georgians and Victorians has left a legacy of beautiful buildings including The Pavilion Gardens, Crescent and Opera House. Pick up a leaflet and follow the Buxton Heritage Trail to find out more about this charming town. Buxton is grander than Bakewell with a greater choice of amenities including several supermarkets if you choose not to have your shopping delivered to Stocking Mill at the start of your stay.
Once you’ve dragged yourself away from the charming towns of the Peak District, you’ll discover the spectacular scenery that attracts millions of visitors to the National park every year. It genuinely doesn’t matter what season you arrive because it always looks beautiful. The Monsal Trail is very popular with walkers and cyclists of all abilities, and there are miles of excellent footpaths and rewarding mountain bike trails to explore. Curbar Edge, together with Baslow and Froggatt Edges provide ample opportunity for keen climbers and hikers, but even a stroll or cycle around the village is a visual delight.
Don’t miss Chatsworth House. Even if you think stately homes are not your cup of tea, this magnificent property with its extensive grounds will change your mind. If the weather is good, set aside a separate day just to explore the acres of parkland, gardens and maze. The house is the epitome of opulence, and you’ll be staggered by the beauty of it as you walk through rooms filled with priceless objects.
Whatever your reason for visiting the Peak District, a stay in Stocking Mill will make it a holiday you will long to repeat.
