Ashford Mill is so incredible that you will want to plan your holiday around it, rather than simply use it as a convenient base. The gorgeous stone building is packed full of Grade II listed character to provide wonderfully comfortable accommodation in unique surroundings. The mill, which sits in a private garden beside the River Wye, is only a few minute’s walk from the centre of Ashford in the Water and two excellent pubs, the Ashford Arms and the Bulls Head. Sleeping seven people in three bedrooms, its layout and cosy decor make it as suitable for couples as it is for larger families or groups of friends.
Ashford in the Water is one of the most picturesque villages in the entire Peak District National Park, boasting the much-photographed Sheepwash Bridge (a lovely medieval stone arched construction crossing the Wye that is perfect for Pooh Sticks), as well as a beautiful church, well-stocked village store and popular tea rooms. As peaceful as it seems now, it is difficult to picture the village as a hub of the marble industry, with glossy black Ashford marble being quarried in the surrounding area, as well as the stocking making industry.
Being in the middle of Buxton and Bakewell makes Ashford Mill the perfect place to stay while exploring the Peak District. Not only is it just two miles outside Bakewell, but it is also only eight miles from Buxton, and around half an hour’s drive from magnificent Chatsworth House. There are wonderful walking and cycling trails that run through and around the village, including an excellent footpath which leads across fields and meadows, under the Victorian-built Monsal Viaduct, and up to Monsal Head where you are rewarded with breathtaking views.
Bakewell is a relaxed, friendly town with a good variety of cafes and restaurants, as well as a vibrant community of independent shop owners based in the beautiful stone buildings that date back centuries. It has the only market in the Peak District, attracting more than one hundred stallholders every Monday as well as hosting a live cattle auction. Buxton’s beautiful architecture gives it a grand air. Fashionable Georgians and Victorians went there to “take the waters” for their health benefits, but also to see and be seen in this popular holiday destination. There is a waymarked town walk that takes you past some of Buxton’s most impressive sights, including The Crescent, the Devonshire Royal Hospital with one of the largest domed roofs in the world, the Opera House, and an original Victorian letterbox believed to be just one of ten remaining in the country.
Poole’s Cavern and Buxton Country Park are nearby, as is St Anne’s Well. Staying at Ashford Mill also puts you close to Haddon Hall, Thornbridge Hall Gardens, the Monsal Trail and Limestone Way, and a wealth of beautiful villages and the spectacular scenery that the region is famous for. The Peak District National Park is an incredible destination in any season, and Ashford Mill’s understated luxury and relaxed style will make it a wonderfully memorable part of your holiday.

Ashford Mill is a former mill that has been expertly converted to offer a high standard of holiday accommodation in the Peak District National Park. Set beside the River Wye, its Grade II listing means that beautiful original features including substantial oak beams and some of the mill's mechanical engineering have been preserved and skillfully incorporated into the design in a way that is both beautiful and practical. The mill's renewable energy is generated from its own historic turbine.
