About Ashford Mill

Ashford Mill is so incredible that you will want to plan your holiday around it, rather than simply use it as a convenient base. The gorgeous stone building is packed full of Grade II listed character to provide wonderfully comfortable accommodation in unique surroundings. The mill, which sits in a private garden beside the River Wye, is only a few minute’s walk from the centre of Ashford in the Water and two excellent pubs, the Ashford Arms and the Bulls Head. Sleeping seven people in three bedrooms, its layout and cosy decor make it as suitable for couples as it is for larger families or groups of friends.

Ashford in the Water is one of the most picturesque villages in the entire Peak District National Park, boasting the much-photographed Sheepwash Bridge (a lovely medieval stone arched construction crossing the Wye that is perfect for Pooh Sticks), as well as a beautiful church, well-stocked village store and popular tea rooms. As peaceful as it seems now, it is difficult to picture the village as a hub of the marble industry, with glossy black Ashford marble being quarried in the surrounding area, as well as the stocking making industry.

Being in the middle of Buxton and Bakewell makes Ashford Mill the perfect place to stay while exploring the Peak District. Not only is it just two miles outside Bakewell, but it is also only eight miles from Buxton, and around half an hour’s drive from magnificent Chatsworth House. There are wonderful walking and cycling trails that run through and around the village, including an excellent footpath which leads across fields and meadows, under the Victorian-built Monsal Viaduct, and up to Monsal Head where you are rewarded with breathtaking views.

Bakewell is a relaxed, friendly town with a good variety of cafes and restaurants, as well as a vibrant community of independent shop owners based in the beautiful stone buildings that date back centuries. It has the only market in the Peak District, attracting more than one hundred stallholders every Monday as well as hosting a live cattle auction. Buxton’s beautiful architecture gives it a grand air. Fashionable Georgians and Victorians went there to “take the waters” for their health benefits, but also to see and be seen in this popular holiday destination. There is a waymarked town walk that takes you past some of Buxton’s most impressive sights, including The Crescent, the Devonshire Royal Hospital with one of the largest domed roofs in the world, the Opera House, and an original Victorian letterbox believed to be just one of ten remaining in the country.

Poole’s Cavern and Buxton Country Park are nearby, as is St Anne’s Well. Staying at Ashford Mill also puts you close to Haddon Hall, Thornbridge Hall Gardens, the Monsal Trail and Limestone Way, and a wealth of beautiful villages and the spectacular scenery that the region is famous for. The Peak District National Park is an incredible destination in any season, and Ashford Mill’s understated luxury and relaxed style will make it a wonderfully memorable part of your holiday.

Location (The Peak District)

Accommodation Comprises:

Ashford Mill is a former mill that has been expertly converted to offer a high standard of holiday accommodation in the Peak District National Park. Set beside the River Wye, its Grade II listing means that beautiful original features including substantial oak beams and some of the mill's mechanical engineering have been preserved and skillfully incorporated into the design in a way that is both beautiful and practical. The mill's renewable energy is generated from its own historic turbine.

Ground Floor:

  • The open plan kitchen/diner is at the heart of this wonderful home. The bespoke kitchen is a stylish blend of traditional and modern, with a butler's sink, dishwasher, four-oven Aga, American-style fridge/freezer and original flagstone floor. The generous expanse of wooden bench and large island worktop, together with ample cupboard space for storage of utensils and groceries, means that it is easy to prepare and serve meals for a full house.
  • The unique carved dining table fits the space beautifully, and there are seven leather chairs that harmonise with the decor and natural oak of the exposed beams.
  • A comfortable living area leads off the dining room. It has large modern sofa and armchairs arranged to face a 50-inch wall-mounted smart TV.
  • Glass doors open from the living room to the paved patio area.
  • A convenient cloakroom with WC and basin is a must in a large house, and there is also a boot/utility room for storing and drying wet coats and wellies.

First Floor

  • Access to the first floor is via an impressive steel and glass staircase which leads to an enormous 40-foot long living area with exposed beams and comfortable seating. There is another large smart TV on the wall, and a quality sound system.
  • Bedroom 1 has a six-foot wide super king size sleigh bed. The tiled en-suite has a shower, WC and handbasin.
  • Original millstones and machinery have been incorporated into the design of Bedroom 2, which features a king size sleigh bed, and the room also benefits from a dressing room and designer en-suite with double shower, WC and handbasin.
  • Bedroom 3 is in the former grain store. It has adult-sized bunk beds and an additional single bed.
  • The family bathroom features a generously deep bath, WC and handbasin. All the bathrooms and en-suites have designer lighting for a five star hotel feel.

Outside: The site has a history of milling dating back nearly a thousand years, and the rushing sound of the river is a peaceful backdrop to your stay. The garden has both paved and grass areas, garden furniture and a gas barbecue. There is ample parking, with three spaces outside the mill, another private space across the road, and further parking available on the lane.

Additional Information: All utilities, linen and towels are included in the cost of hire. Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome through prior arrangement with the owner. The owners stock the property with basic cleaning equipment and non-perishable store cupboard ingredients. A travel cot and high chair are available on request. All male and all female parties are accepted by arrangement but sorry, no hen or stag parties.

Prices: Please contact the owner directly who will provide an accurate price based on your party size and personal requirements. Short breaks are available all year round with three-night minimum breaks (starting on a Friday) offered over the weekend. Please contact the owner for late availability.
