In the heart of England, Nottinghamshire is notorious as the home of Robin Hood, the legendary hero who stole from the rich to give to the poor. The Robin Hood Trail takes visitors on a journey around many sites that pay homage to the tale of Robin Hood. Nottingham Castle is said to be the home of Hood's enemy and is situated high above Nottingham, with amazing views of the county. There are many activities within the castle to get involved in, including art galleries, museums and a medieval playground for children. Underneath the castle lies a labyrinth of caves and passages. Guided tours are available through the maze of tunnels to find out the hidden secrets of the castle. One of the oldest inns in England, Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem, is a perfect place to stop on your visit, with a range of local delights to try. The cellars below also hold many secrets of Nottinghamshire, including part of Nottingham Castle's jail cells!
Nottinghamshire is famous for its woodland and forests. The popular Sherwood Forest, once home to Robin Hood and his merry men, is full of great outdoor activities. Known as the Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve, the area has vast amounts of plant life and wildlife to discover. The Major Oak, at the heart of the forest, is over 800 years old and trying to find it is a great adventure for all. There are also many walking trails through the woodland for those who want to experience a peaceful day out in Sherwood Forest. A festival is held every August in the area that celebrates the life and stories of Robin Hood, with costumed entertainers and crazy activities for the whole family to partake in.
Robin Hood is not the only famous person to come out of Nottinghamshire. The literary genius D.H. Lawrence came from the area and it inspired many of his novels. There is a heritage centre dedicated to his life and work, which is a great option for book lovers. Lord Byron, the well-known poet, had two homes in Nottinghamshire, Newstead Abbey and Colwick Hall. The latter has now been converted into a hotel and Newstead Abbey remains a spectacular, stately manor in the Nottinghamshire countryside. Tours of the Abbey and surrounding parkland are frequent and give an insight into the artistic life of Lord Byron.
The city of Nottingham is a great reason to visit Nottinghamshire by itself. However, with tales of Robin Hood roaming through the forests and writers working in their stunning, stately homes, it would be a shame not to venture further into the beautiful, Nottinghamshire countryside.
