Farley Cottage is the key if your family can't decide whether they want a bucket-and-spade seaside holiday or a country escape. The charming period cottage is made from local stone and sits on a quiet road with a private secure walled garden. It is in the peaceful village of Ellingham, within walking distance of the welcoming Pack Horse Inn (where we can heartily recommend the Sunday roast made using all local ingredients!). There is space for up to four people to sleep in two bedrooms and the cottage is child and pet-friendly, so is perfect for families as well as couples.
Ellingham is ideally located for exploring the Northumberland coast and countryside. An excellent way to get your bearings is on the circular walk that goes from the village to Newham and Chathill along country lanes and through fields and countryside. The beautiful views will lighten your spirits in every season whether you are admiring hedgerows frothy with cow parsley or the sparkling frost on the winter ground. The Northumberland Coast Footpath gives views over the beaches and sea - views which can be quite dramatic, depending on the weather! Even in the height of summer, the stunning stretch that makes up the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is never crowded, and it's not unusual to find that you're the only person around.
Days out can include building sandcastles at Beadnell Bay or Low Newton, or galloping on horseback along the sand at Seahouses. Stand in awe of Bamburgh Castle before fortifying yourself with a generous wedge of cake at one of the town's excellent cafes, or make memories to last a lifetime on a sightseeing boat trip around the Farne Islands nature reserve to see puffins and seals, Slightly further afield, but still no more than an hour's drive, are Alnwick Castle, Berwick-Upon-Tweed and Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, The Northumberland National Park is half an hour away, with more opportunities to walk, mountain bike, and climb, or you could have fun exploring towns and villages such as Warkworth, Wooler and Amble.
Northumberland is magnificently unspoiled and gorgeous in every season and staying at Farley Cottage puts you in a wonderful location to enjoy the best sights and attractions it has to offer.
