As far as holiday destinations go, Northamptonshire is probably the most underrated county in England. Its geographic location in the heart of England has given it a rich history from Roman roads to Saxon and Viking occupation, Civil War battles and thriving industry; it is as lively today as it has ever been. The Coach House, situated three miles from Northampton in the lovely village of Wootton, is a wonderful place to stay. The Grade II listed cottage, which sleeps four people in two bedrooms, is a short walk from the village amenities including the Yeoman of England pub. Despite this, it is nice and peaceful with the owners creating a comfortable stay for you to start and end every memorable day. Northamptonshire's countryside and comfortable proximity to major cities like London and Birmingham (you can reach both by train from Northampton within an hour) made it a favourite with aristocrats and gentry for building their country houses, giving it the nickname of "the County of Shires".

Find out more about Northamptonshire

Nature walks, cycling routes, local wildlife and scenic landscapes are just some of the fantastic attractions in its rural areas. Some parts of the county haven't changed much in years and retain their traditionalism and old age ways. Indeed, there are various country parks located throughout Northamptonshire that provide great experiences for all the family including picnic facilities, tranquil lakes, wildlife and birdlife, boat rides and nature trails. The great outdoors is one of the main selling points of the county and it is something that can be enjoyed by everyone who visits.

The county is especially appealing for kids and there is a lot to do for families who visit. Attractions such as the Old Dairy Farm Centre with its variety of farm animals and the more modern entertainment complexes with cinemas, go-karting and indoor play areas provide a respite from being outdoors.

Northamptonshire is an historic location as well and inside its limits there are various places of historical interest and stately homes. For example the home of the Spencer family at Althorp is a magnificent building with green, open and luscious gardens, while visitors can head to Rockingham Castle which has nine centuries worth of history inside its walls and has played a significant part in many periods throughout the ages from William the Conqueror, to the English Civil War and onto the Victorian era.

Sports fans will perhaps know the county best for housing Silverstone, the famous motor racing track which has been hosting the British Grand Prix since 1987. Within Northamptonshire are a series of canals and waterways that provide a great opportunity to experience some tranquillity in amongst the countryside. Sailing down the narrow waters of the county while witnessing native wildlife on its shores, is a good way in which to see some lesser spotted parts of the surrounding area and there are two major canals that pass through the region, the Grand Union Canal and the Oxford Canal.

The town of Northampton is not quite a city officially, however it has everything you could need in one place. Its university creates an animated, student feel to the town and it has numerous shopping malls, designer outlets, cafes, bars and nightclubs for those who want to experience a hustle and bustle environment.

Northamptonshire is maybe one of the more underrated counties in England but it dispels this misconception for anyone who visits. The vast nature of its rural countryside with little market towns, nature walks and endearing wildlife can rival any in the country while, for those who prefer a more urban setting, places such as Northampton town itself provides all the amenities you would expect from a well-populated area. For kids and adults alike, Northamptonshire has attractions to suit everyone.
