Wren Cottage is a dog-friendly holiday retreat on the edge of the North York Moors. It is one of eight in a collection offered by Old Oak Cottages on a peaceful 400-acre farming estate with superb onsite facilities that include a heated indoor swimming pool, spa and sauna, all-weather tennis court, and acres of grounds with a children's play area and picnic sites. Wren Cottage is in Little Thirkleby, close to the Hambleton Hills and just 10-minutes from Thirsk. It has one bedroom and is perfect for couples or solo travellers who want to explore all of the sights and attractions that make this area such a wonderful year-round holiday destination.
Thirsk is a welcoming market town. Stall-holders set out their wares in the cobbled marketplace as they have done for centuries. Stop by on Monday or Saturday for local meat, vegetables and fruit, or visit one of the town's independent shops, cafes and pubs. Fans of James Herriot and the "All Creatures Great and Small" series can visit the award-winning museum where he lived and worked. There is plenty to do in the area around Thirsk. The White Horse is a well-known local landmark cut into a hill in nearby Kilburn in 1857. Walking and cycling - both road cycling and mountain biking - are always popular ways to enjoy the North York Moors' beauty and the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Bike hire is available in Thirsk and Sutton Bank.
Local attractions include visiting historic houses and gardens that include the breathtaking Castle Howard and Nunnington Hall, Beningborough Hall, and the Harlow Carr Gardens. Fountains Abbey and Rievalux Abbey are also close, as is the wonderfully fragrant Yorkshire Lavender Farm. Spend a day at the races in Thirsk, Northallerton or Ampleforth, book a guided pony trek through a local riding school, or play a round of golf at a choice of locations within around half an hour's drive. Other places for a day out include the National Centre for Birds of Prey, Go Ape in Dalby, the Lightwater Valley Theme Park, and The Forbidden Corner.
