About Balvonie House

Balvonie House is an amazing self-catering holiday home in Skelmorlie that delights at every turn. From the luxurious furnishings that let you feel as if you're staying in the finest of country houses to the spectacular views over the Kyles of Bute and Arran, it is nothing less than magnificent. Eleven sumptuous bedrooms sleep 26 people in a high standard of comfort, making this property perfect for your needs. Host your family reunion, accommodate your wedding parties, or catch up with your favourite friends over days of golf, fishing, sailing, and country pursuits. Follow happy days with memorable evenings lingering over delicious meals, relaxing in front of an open fire, or watching a blockbuster in the cinema room.

Skelmorlie is a pretty coastal village in the west of Scotland, around 45 minutes from Glasgow. The house dates from 1906 and was built for a wealthy industrialist who spared no expense on his family's holiday home. It was designed to be a place to relax, entertain, and show off the owner's success and is one of the few remaining mansions in the area that has not been broken up into smaller parts. You can walk from the house to the local shop and village pub, the Eglington Bar, and you're under half a mile from Skelmorlie Golf Course and fishing lakes. Wemyss Bay is just over a mile or around a 15-minute walk from the house, putting you within easy reach of a mainline train to Glasgow and regular ferry service to picturesque Rothesay in the Isle of Bute, where you can see the collections and gardens at Mount Stuart.

Largs hosts a weekly farmers' market every Saturday. It's a lovely place to browse, pick up fresh ingredients for self-catering, and indulge in a sweet treat. Walk along the Victorian promenade to build an appetite for ice cream or fish and chips. Don't forget your Viksø helmet if you're there at the end of August - Largs host an annual Viking festival over the last weekend of the month to commemorate the 1263 Battle of Largs.

Balvonie House welcomes families and friends all year round. Children and dogs love the garden, which has lots of space to run and play and a stream to paddle and dam (you should supervise children at all times). Waitrose, Morrisons, Tesco and Sainsbury's deliver to the house if you want to arrange for groceries to be delivered after your arrival or as a top-up shop during your stay.

Downstairs:

  • Enormous kitchen/breakfast room with a bay window and stunning views over the garden to the water from the breakfast table. This is a cook's kitchen where family and friends will happily gather to chat while they prepare meals. It's also suitable if you have external caterers in to cook for you.
  • Impressive dining room with space for everyone at the long table. Original timber beams and floors glow warmly in the soft light from chandeliers. It is an attractive room that can easily be dressed up for celebratory meals.
  • Show films or presentations in the cinema room where even a compilation of family clips will feel like an Oscar-worthy production.
  • After dinner, retire to the games room for a game of pool or to watch TV.
  • Stunning views are a feature in the wood-panelled sitting room where the colours are influenced by the natural surroundings with a mid-Century flair. It's a great space in which to entertain with different seating areas, a log burner, and shelves stocked with books for quiet moments.
  • A twin room on the ground floor features two single beds with upholstered bed heads, rich colours, and a layout that is accessible for guests who use a wheelchair. The tiled wetroom is also accessible and features a shower, WC, heated towel rail, and a hand basin.
  • Extra rooms include a utility room with laundry facilities, a boot room, and a cloakroom with a WC and a hand basin.

Upstairs:

  • Large landing with a quiet reading nook. Two corridors lead to ten bedrooms.
  • Chinoiserie room with an enormous emperor sized bed and furnishings with an Eastern twist. The bay window frames breath taking views.
