One The Old Alarm is in Lymington, a few steps from the harbour on the traffic-free cobbled Quay Hill. Dating from 1680, the Grade II listed building is one of the oldest in town and sleeps up to four people (+ infant in cot) in two bedrooms. It has recently received a full refurbishment that makes the most of its space and original features without losing the original character that makes it unique. The layout is ideal for couples and friends, but also works well for small families. Shops, restaurants and historic pubs like The Kings Head and The Ship Inn are all a short walk from the door.
Lymington is a pretty Hampshire town on the Lymington River overlooking the Solent. It is lively in the summer, especially with day-trippers taking the ferry between Lymington and the Isle of Wight. Lymington is a popular place for those who sail and a stroll along the waterfront will have you passing chandleries and places to hire a kayak or paddle-board, either of which is an excellent way to enjoy the water if you don’t want to charter a boat.
Your holiday has so much potential when you choose to stay in Lymington. It’s a market town, so has a great choice of shops and a weekly market with over 100 stalls every Saturday from 8am. If it’s hot, take a dip in the Lymington outdoor swimming pool, which is the oldest operating lido in the UK. Enjoy a refreshing coastal walk or hire a bike and explore on two wheels, or climb into a different saddle and go horse riding along miles of dedicated bridleways. With the New Forest National Park on the doorstep, you definitely won’t run out of places to go!
Days out can include admiring the many stunning cars at the National Motor Museum, or walking around the house and grounds of Beaulieu Abbey. Visit Hurst Castle, the oldest part of which was built by Henry VIII and which operates as a private museum. You can walk there along Hurst Spit, but it’s 1.5 miles of shingle so you may prefer to take a water taxi instead. Go to Milford-on-Sea for a day at the seaside, or drive 18 miles west to Bournemouth.
It doesn’t matter your age, your interests or the time of year that you visit, Lymington is a perennial favourite place for families and friends of all ages.
