The Lamb Shed is a wonderful holiday cottage for couples or individuals searching for an authentically rural escape. Located at the end of a quiet country lane in Llanvihangel-Ystern-Llewern, between Monmouth and Abergavenny, the converted barn has easy access to some of the best walks in the area including the long-distance Offa's Dyke footpath. It's within the owner's organic farm grounds, about 50 metres from the farmhouse, and completely private unless the resident peacock takes an interest in you! The A40 is only six miles away, which makes The Lamb Shed not only easy to reach from the Midlands, West Wales, and the South West of England, it also makes it simple to explore.
Llanvihangel-Ystern-Llewern is blissfully quiet. Apart from the church, which dates back to medieval times, it's virtually all fields and farmland. There is every sort of footpath you can imagine, from a meander beside the Monnow River to clambering up a rocky mountain trail. The Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Black Mountains, and the Brecon Beacons National Park are within a few miles. You'll leave The Lamb Shed with happy memories of paths walked and a list of routes to tackle during your next stay. Mountain bikers are also spoiled for choice, with sweeping country lanes for road cyclists to enjoy. Guests especially love the Three Castles Walk linking Grosmont, White and Skenfrith castles. If you find the 19-mile loop a bit too challenging, each castle stands proudly on its own merits. There's a great pub near Grosmont castle, while a picnic inside a tower at White Castle is an experience you'll find hard to replicate anywhere other than in Wales. If you prefer something more refined than a pint for your post-walk beverage, book a table at the Sugarloaf Vineyard to try their sensational wines.
Shopping for your self-catering stay is a simple matter of popping into Monmouth or Abergavenny, both of which have a choice of supermarkets, shops and eateries. Abergavenny's market is hugely popular with locals and visitors. Go Tuesday, Friday or Saturday for food, and Wednesday for bric-a-brac and collectables. An alternative is Ross-on-Wye, around half an hour's drive. Kayaking, fishing, horse riding and golf are almost as popular as walking and mountain biking. All are available locally with tuition and equipment hire possible for those who need it.
Bookings for The Lamb Shed, including short breaks, are available all year round.
