Owl Cottage is a luxurious escape for couples and friends who want somewhere exceptional where they can relax and unwind. In its rural location, just outside the peaceful hamlet of Sotby and close to where the great British Poet Laureate Lord Tennyson grew up, the cottage is pleasantly easy to reach being about half an hour’s drive from the historic City of Lincoln. A major feature of this cottage is the private indoor swimming pool that is for the sole use of the cottage guests.
The Lincolnshire Wolds has been designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is renowned for its wonderful countryside walks which will beckon to you from the doorstep. Start by exploring Sotby Wood and Sotby Nature Reserve, both of which are just a short walk away. Venture a few miles from the cottage to find the Viking Way long distance footpath, which passes through Horncastle and the Lincolnshire Limewoods before reaching Rutland Water. Lincolnshire is renowned for being flat, but the Wolds’ gently undulating hills and curving country lanes show a far more interesting truth.
The coast is on the other side of the Lincolnshire Wolds, around 26 miles away. If you are staying in November and December, then you should certainly take a day trip to Donna Nook Nature Reserve which stretches for six miles and is a birthing ground for grey seals. Skegness, Mablethorpe, Saltfleet, Cleethorpes and Grimsby are less than an hour’s drive from Owl Cottage, so you can easily jump in the car and spend a day at the beach if you fancy some sea air.
The best place to stock up on provisions for your holiday is in Louth, around a 20-minute drive from the cottage. The surrounding area is extremely fertile, and Louth has a wealth of butchers, bakeries, delis and markets selling fresh and tasty regional produce. We suggest grabbing the makings of a picnic before taking a relaxing stroll through the town to Hubbard’s Hill or, if your schedule or the weather does not allow that, stopping in a local cafe for a delicious slice of cake and a pot of tea. Horncastle is slightly closer, and also good for shopping, particularly if you like browsing through antique and curio shops. It has been a thriving market town since the Romans settled there, and still runs weekly markets every Thursday and Saturday.
Lincoln is a fantastic city with a magnificent cathedral, cobbled streets, and a castle where you can see one of the four remaining copies of the Magna Carta. The Museum of Lincolnshire has a diverse range of exhibits to appeal to all ages and interests, while the RAF Scampton Heritage Centre specialises in military aviation history, including that of the Red Arrows and the Dam Busters. Lincoln also has all the usual entertainments you would expect from a city including great shopping, lots of places to eat and drink, a cinema, theatre and parks.
Owl Cottage is perfectly located for you to easily access all the best bits of Lincolnshire whether you want the excitement of a city or the serenity of the countryside, allowing you to tailor your holiday to suit your tastes and stay in comfort while you do so.
