About Dovedale Holiday Cottage

Dovedale Holiday Cottage sleeps up to six guests and is located in a wing of the 16th Century Hartsop Hall. Nestling under the fellside of Hartsop Above How, Dovedale affords spectacular views and is located on the Hartsop Hall Estate in between Ambleside and Patterdale (Ullswater) amongst some of the most beautiful fells in the Lake District. Sitting at the foot of the Kirkstone Pass near Brotherswater, Dovedale Cottage is wonderfully positioned on a working hill farm and offers guests a self-catering experience amongst a beautiful Lakeland setting.

The peaks of Dove Crag, Hart Crag and High Hartsop Dodd dominate the surrounding landscape and provide shelter to the valley and the entrance to picturesque Dovedale, with its wonderful waterfalls.

Hartsop Hall is owned by the National Trust and is a 16th Century Grade I listed building of historical significance. It is a Lakeland working farm of some three thousand acres which are grazed by predominantly Swaledale sheep, along with a herd of Aberdeen Angus cows. The farm provides a unique opportunity to experience a traditional way of life that is fast disappearing.

The area has wonderful walks with plenty of footpaths that criss-cross the land, leading out over the fells. There is an old bridle path which runs past Hartsop Hall leading to Brotherswater offering a more level walk to the lakeshore (the bridle path has been resurfaced and allows wheelchair access).

Locally, there are plenty of things to see and do without the need of a long car journey. Ullswater, one of the most beautiful quietest lakes, provides endless opportunities for boating activities and lakeshore walking. You can take a trip on a steamer and cruise the lake from end to end, or depart at Howtown and enjoy a splendid shore side walk back. Aira Force Waterfall is an incredible sight (especially after heavy rain) and is just a short walk along the lakes west shore. Pony Trekking also provides a great way of exploring the area and is available from the north eastern end of the lake.

At the north end of Ullswater is Dalemain with its beautiful garden. Home for generations to the Hasell family, it is open to the public and well worth a visit, as is Townend, an almost untouched yeoman farmer’s house just a short drive away. Troutbeck is also home to the Lakeland Horticultural Society’s Open Gardens at Holehird which is popular with gardeners.

The popular town of Ambleside is six miles away and is a magnet for climbers, walkers and tourists with its pubs, restaurants, outdoor clothing shops and cinema.

With so many things to do in the immediate local area and a vast array of attractions within easy reach, this is an ideal place to enjoy a beautiful tranquil setting and a taste of farm life in the Lake District.
