Living
Avondale is a home from home in the Lake District National Park. There is space for four people to sleep in two bedrooms, so it is ideal for couples, families or friends, and because accommodation is all on one level, (please note that there are two steps leading up into the property but once inside it is all on one level) it may be suitable for those with with mobility issues. Avondale is in the pretty Cumbrian village of Staveley, within walking distance of the train station and the friendly Eagle and Child pub.
Staveley is a quiet community with far reaching views towards Banner Ridge. Visitors come to enjoy the beautiful walks around Lilly Fell, Craggy Wood and Reston Scar and it is a fantastic place to escape from the rat-race and settle into a slower pace of life that is dictated by the seasons and the farming calendar. The centre of the village is protected as a conservation area and has a genuine old-world charm. There is an excellent bike shop in the village where you can hire bikes and pick up any extra equipment you need, while a visit to the Hawkshead Brewery will be the highlight of any beer lover's holiday.
Conveniently, Staveley is on the train line between Kendal and Windermere (plus the 555 bus takes passengers into Kendal and Lancaster or Keswick) so visitors can leave the car behind and use the train or bus for day trips to some favourite Lake District locations, although there is a main road looping around the village to make touring by car quick and easy. The beauty and serenity of the Lake District landscape have inspired countless artists and authors over the years, and there is a good pottery studio in neighbouring Kentmere. Staveley also has a delicious ice cream shop, an artisan bakery and an excellent café.
The Lake District National Park is a paradise for anyone who likes being outdoors, and there are lots of ways to enjoy this fantastic landscape including along the Dales Way footpath and the National Cycle Route which both run through the village. Sail the lakes and waterways, try your hand at fishing, or hike and climb craggy peaks and feel like you are the only person for miles. Guests who take their adventure seriously can book guided tours and activities through one of several local adventure companies.
Other Lake District attractions you can visit during your stay include the World of Beatrix Potter and Hill Top, Beatrix Potter's home, the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, Holker Hall and Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Museum. Avondale is available to rent all year round and makes the perfect home-away-from-home for your holiday in the Lake District.
