7 Reasons to Holiday in Appleby

Here are seven unmissable reasons why you need to stay in a cottage in Appleby.

Outstanding Architecture - Some market towns are in a beautiful location, but the state of their buildings lets them down. Appleby is as lovely to look at as the countryside that surrounds it, with the jewel being the magnificent Appleby Castle where you can fish on the River Eden, enjoy afternoon tea beside the fire or even take a guided ghost tour. Appleby also has a lovely church dating from the 12th Century, the Hospital of St Anne and The Cloisters. Just walk down Boroughgate to see it all.

Scenic Walks and Bike Rides - Exploring Appleby and the surrounding area is a treat. Visitors who enjoy the challenge of a long route should consider the 12-mile loop that starts in Appleby and goes around Dufton Pike with an elevation of nearly 1,400 feet. A more leisurely walk is the path to Rutter Force waterfall which goes beside the River Eden. The Eden Valley also offers plenty of variety for both road cyclists and mountain bikers with access directly from Appleby. With the Lake District, North Pennines and Yorkshire Dales all close by, there is plenty to keep everyone happy.

Delicious Food - Cumbrian farms produce some of the tastiest food in the UK, and local pubs and restaurants know how to make the most of it. Traditional Cumbrian recipes include Sticky Toffee Pudding, Cumberland Sausage and Salt Marsh Lamb. Appleby’s Saturday market is an excellent place to buy ingredients directly from the producers, while food-lovers should add Appleby Creamery Cheeses and the Appleby Brewery to their gastronomic itinerary.

Breathtaking Views - The scope of the landscape gives the area around Appleby unforgettable views. Some of these can be seen from the long-distance Pennine Way, while others are more readily appreciated from a seat on the Settle to Carlisle Railway which crosses the magnificent Ribble Viaduct.

Friendly Towns and Villages - Appleby is not the only lovely town in the Eden Valley. From here you can also reach Kirkby Stephen, Penrith, Brough, Shap, Orton and Tebay, each with a unique history and individual character that makes visiting a pleasure.

Local Attractions - Whatever the weather, there is always something interesting to see or fun to do within easy reach of your holiday cottage in Appleby. Eden Valley attractions include waterfalls like those at Ashgill Force and Aira Force, beautiful ruins such as Brougham Castle and Penrith Castle, ancient stone circles, golf courses at Penrith and Kirkby Stephen, and stately homes and gardens like Dalemain Mansion and Acorn Bank.

Flora and Fauna - With much of the surrounding area protected either as a National Park or an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it is unsurprising that a wide variety of flora and fauna flourish in the Eden Valley. Red squirrels are a reasonably common sight as are roe deer, kestrel, lapwings and golden plover.

The Eden Valley has links to the Vikings, the Saxons, and even King Arthur, whose father, Uther Pendragon, is reputed to have built Pendragon Castle. Of all its towns and villages, Appleby is arguably the prettiest and most welcoming, and the perfect place for your next holiday.
