About 1 Smardale Cottages

1 Smardale Cottages has been offering a warm welcome to visitors for over 150 years. Thanks to a recent and extensive refurbishment by the current owners, its appeal has never been stronger. The charming stone holiday cottage is in the quiet hamlet of Smardale and boasts incredible views of the Fells and the Smardale Viaduct. The two-bedroom cottage comfortably sleeps up to four people and is ideal for couples or families.

Smardale is the perfect choice for a holiday in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Although small and quiet, the hamlet is within easy reach of many of the regions favourite sights and attractions. Kirkby Stephen is only three miles away, and a lovely walk or bike ride if you'd prefer to leave the car behind. The market town is well stocked with tea rooms, pubs and independent shops that include a butcher and a bakery, and a vibrant weekly market every Monday. If that's not enough to satisfy your urge to shop, Penrith and Kendal are both only 45 minutes away.

Cars may be convenient, but there is no better way to truly experience the splendour of the landscape than up close and personal. Mountain biking and cycling are both popular with both disciplines well catered for with an excellent network of trails including the Coast to Coast. However, nothing is more accessible than walking, and 1 Smardale Cottages has direct access to the Smardale Gill National Nature Reserve at the bottom of the garden. Follow the red squirrels through the gate to be rewarded with fantastic views, including that of the viaduct. Scandal Beck is an easy 10-minute stroll from the cottage, and there is a wide network of footpaths leading to other spectacular views.

Day trips can include visiting local landmarks such as Pendragon Castle, which legend claims was built by King Arthur's father, Uther Pendragon. The Wild Boar Fell and The Nine Standards are about half an hour's drive from the cottage, while you can reach Ullswater in the Lake District National Park in about 45 minutes. With places like Wensleydale, Swaledale and Teesdale all within easy reach, there's always somewhere beautiful to go for a day out, no matter what season you're there.

1 Smaredale Cottages is a part of the landscape in which it sits and staying there will give you the sense that, however brief, you are an unerasable part of its history.

Accommodation Comprises:

The cottage is semi-detached with a peaceful garden that overlooks fields and countryside, and accommodation over two levels. It has recently been restored and refurbished to a high standard.

Downstairs:

  • Entrance hall with tiled floor, a staircase leading to the upper level, and a door into the living room.
  • Being in the country, you're just as likely to enter through the rear of the property where there is a handy boot room with space to leave walking boots and coats to dry.
  • Living/dining room with a deep, three-seater sofa and an armchair. The TV has Freesat channels, and there's a cosy wood burner to keep the room warm and welcoming in cold weather. The dining table seats four people.
  • The kitchen has solid worktops and modern appliances that include a double oven. The owners have filled it with a good range of utensils and equipment you'll need for a self-catering holiday.
  • Separate utility room with a WC, washer/dryer and sink.

Upstairs:

  • Bedroom 1 has a double bed with bedside tables and reading lights, and a chest of drawers. The original beams are a lovely feature, as are the rural views.
  • Bedroom 2 has a flexible layout with either two full-sized (3ft-wide) single beds or one super-kingsize (6ft-wide) bed. It is south facing, with gorgeous views and plenty of proper storage.
  • Stylish bathroom with a bath, shower, WC and a handbasin.

Outside: The south-facing garden is fully-enclosed with seating, a barbecue area, and an area of lawn. The gate at the bottom of the garden opens directly onto a nature reserve, and red squirrels are a frequent visitor. Guests also have off-street parking.

Additional Information: All utilities, WiFi, Egyptian cotton sheets and towels are included, and the owner also provides an initial basket of fuel for the wood burner. Well-behaved dogs are welcome with the owner's prior agreement. Please enquire when booking. The steep interior stairs are not suitable for children under the age of 10 or people with limited mobility. Smoking is not permitted. The nearest train station is 3-miles away and the owners are happy to pick guests up from there.
