Standen Granary is perfect for couples searching for a romantic country escape. It sits in the private grounds of a 16th Century farmhouse on the edge of the village of Biddenden, within four minutes drive (thirty mins walk) of the Red Lion Pub and The West House, a Michelin starred restaurant, and within ninety minutes of central London either by train or by car. Heathrow and Gatwick are also within easy reach, making Standen Granary a wonderful choice from whichever direction you come.
Biddenden is a picture-perfect village in the Weald of Kent where pretty cottages once housed Flemish weavers. It is a lovely place to stroll and take afternoon tea, but even more so if you take a picnic to enjoy in the Millenium Field, a conservation area with woods and fields to walk and play, and streams and ponds for paddling on a hot day. Close by are the award-winning Biddenden Vineyards where you can take a tour and taste locally produced wine and cider.
Less than four miles from Biddenden, Headcorn is a larger village with a wider variety of shops, including a supermarket, and a train station with a direct connection to London’s Charing Cross. There is a small airfield where you can arrange to fly in a vintage Spitfire, Harvard or Tiger Moth, and the Lashenden Air Warcraft Museum is nearby. A ten-minute drive from the cottage, Cranbrook is a charming town with a working windmill, beautiful church, and pretty white clapboard houses and shops.
Tenterden, Ashford and Maidstone are all within an easy half-hour drive from Standen Granary. Each provides a good choice of shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs, and the area is rich in attractions like the Kent & Sussex steam railway, Sissinghurst Castle, Godinton House and Gardens, Ashford Designer Outlet, Leeds Castle, Mote Park, and the Kent Life Museum.
There are lovely footpaths and cycling routes, and several excellent golf courses including Chart Hills (a Nick Faldo designed course), whose links adjoin the grounds of Standen Granary. If you fancy a day at the beach, Camber Sands and Rye are within driving distance, and there is a very good Indian restaurant (the Gram Spice) just a fifteen minute walk from the cottage, making this the ideal retreat for a short break or a longer holiday.
Due to work commitments, the owner is able to answer emails much faster than taking, or returning phone calls so emailing would be preferable.
