Silver Cottage is tucked away down a quiet country lane, surrounded by a private garden and fields. With a double and twin room, it’s perfect for families or couples who want to enjoy the rural beauty of the Kent countryside while still being in a convenient location for Kent’s attractions.
Yalding is five minutes by car or twenty five minutes on foot from the cottage. It dates back over a thousand years and there are still fascinating snippets of its history on display including Twyford Bridge which is one of the best examples of medieval bridges left in England. Town Bridge was the site of a 1643 Civil War Battle where the Cavaliers suffered a significant loss, and the church, which is Grade I listed, has parts remaining from the original 13th Century building.
There are several good pubs and a local shop, as well as a small farmers’ market on the third Saturday of every month between 10am and 1pm. It’s an access point for the River Medway Canoe Trail for canoeing or boating (canoe hire is available from Elveys Canoes in Yalding), and there is quirky teapot museum which has an excellent cafe on Hampstead Lane.
Maidstone is around seven miles (eleven kilometres) from Yalding. It’s a bustling town packed with attractive historic buildings, shops and restaurants, an excellent museum, and a friendly atmosphere. Attractions in and around Maidstone include the Maidstone Museum and Bentlif Art Gallery, Kent Life Heritage Farm Park and, of course, magnificent Leeds Castle. Other places within an hour’s drive include: the historic city of Canterbury; Royal Tunbridge Wells; the castle ruins of Thurnham and Sutton Valence; The Historic Dockyard of Chatham; Stoneacre (National Trust); Lashenden Air Warfare Museum; Greensand Way Long Distant Path (accessible just ten minutes from the cottage); Sissinghurst Castle and Gardens (twenty minutes); Camber Sands / Rye (one hour); and London's bustling capital city which is easily accessible by train from Paddock Wood and West Malling (fifty minutes to Victoria and Charing Cross).
One of the main reasons people come to Kent is to experience the beauty of its countryside, gardens and country houses, and two of the best places to enjoy it are the White Horse Wood Country Park and Mote Park. The North Downs Way stretches some one hundred and fifty six miles between Dover and Surrey and goes through Hollingbourne and Lenham, while Bluebell Hill, Teston Country Park and West Malling (a lovely quaint Kentish town with a good selection of shops and eateries) are also good choices for walking and cycling.
