Aviemore<\/a> in the Cairngorms National Park is a fantastic hub for winter snow sports in Scotland. The island was once connected to the shore by a stone causeway but since the water levels were raised in the 1770s to float timber down the river the causeway has been submerged. The views of the castle on the island and the surrounding forest makes it a fantastic spot for a long leisurely picnic and a lazy day by the water. If you want to stretch your legs you can enjoy a 3 mile low level stroll around the loch, or if you are feeling energetic you can climb Ord Barn. Keep your eyes peeled for red squirrels as well as roe deer and Scottish crossbills. For those who can\u2019t resist the crystal clear waters of the loch you can also hire<\/a> canoes and stand up paddle boards.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marvel at the starry skies<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Scotland is a great place for stargazing. If you want to get a glimpse of the northern lights the best time to visit is between September and March. The high latitude and minimal light pollution in the Scottish Islands<\/a> makes them a great place to see the northern lights.
