Heron Bay is a fantastic log cabin on the shore of Loch Linnhe. It sleeps four people in two ensuite bedrooms with a layout that suits couples, families or friends. Outside is majestic rugged Highland scenery. Inside the handcrafted wooden cabin, it is welcoming and cosy, with indulgent touches that include a super-kingsize bed, a wood-burning stove, and a large deck where guests can gaze across the loch to the mountains during the day. You're only steps from the water and a short drive from Fort William.
Fort William is the perfect holiday destination for hardy outdoor enthusiasts, which isn't to say that you can't find a peaceful spot to sit and simply "be". Lochs, lakes and mountains make this a year-round playground for adventurers. Bring your paddle-board or your kayak and explore the loch, returning for a waterside barbecue and the pleasure of telling stories and talking long after the sun has set. The Nevis mountain range, including Britain's highest peak, is close to the lodge, with endless skiing opportunities in winter and mountain biking in summer. Mountain bikers love this area for the diversity of trails, ranging from world-class downhill courses to challenging cross-country rides. Go rock climbing, hill walking, canyoning or abseiling. If there's an outdoor sport that makes your heart race with excitement, you'll find it here.
It isn't all about the mountains and the Munros when you stay at Heron Bay. The number of lochs and rivers make it ideal for watersports as well. Wild swimming is a fantastic way to reduce stress and improve your wellbeing, though all but the hardiest will need a wetsuit as the water rarely gets above 12C! Loch Linnhe is a saltwater sea loch and popular with anglers for pollock, mackerel and conger eels. Alternatively, head for nearby Lochy, Garry or Oich rivers for salmon, or a freshwater loch for brown trout.
You will easily find all of the food and provisions you need for a self-catering holiday in Fort William, including equipment hire. The town has an excellent array of places to eat, drink and shop, as well as the fascinating West Highland Museum, and the Ben Nevis distillery for that all important dram beside the fire. If you want to combine a day out with some shopping, Oban is a scenic hour's drive away and the gateway to the Scottish Isles.
