Ty Bychan is a holiday cottage for every season. Its name translates as "little house", but this gorgeous one-bedroom property is big on character and charm, packing centuries of hospitality into two storey's in the heart of historic Hay-on-Wye. You are a short stroll from welcoming cafes, independent shops, fantastic pubs, and the specialist book shops that make this friendly town so special. Come in May for the world-renowned Hay Literary Festival, in August for lazy rowing along the River Wye, in autumn for sensational walks through breathtaking countryside, and in winter for beautiful frosty scenes you would expect to see on a Christmas card. Ty Bychan is always waiting to welcome couples or individuals, including those with dogs.
As expected from a town so close to the border with England, Hay-on-Wye has not always been the picture of peace and tranquillity you see today. Its unfortunate castle is no more than a picturesque ruin, having been attacked by both English and Welsh forces, with King John sacking it in 1216 and Prince Llywelyn setting fire to what was left. The Three Tuns pub has been serving pints to travellers since the 16th-Century when Hay was a favourite rest stop for those heading to Brecon's cattle markets. Hay's normally relaxed pace steps up a gear in May when more than 100,000 people visit for its annual literary festival where Jilly Cooper, Salman Rushdie and Bear Grylls are the sorts of famous names who make up the diverse line-up. Hay-on-Wye also hosts festivals celebrating food, crafts, and agriculture.
Hay is not only known for its book town. It is also a favourite holiday destination for walkers, hikers, cyclists and mountain bikers. There is a huge variety of terrain within a small radius of the town with footpaths and cycling routes to suit every ability. Stay Welsh-side of the border for hills and mountains, or cross into England for the rolling countryside. The River Wye is great for canoeing, kayaking and fishing, with equipment hire available locally. Nearby towns to visit include Brecon, Abergavenny, Ludlow, and Crickhowell. You can also go shopping and admire the cathedral in Hereford.
Ty Bychan could not be more perfect for your next escape. Bookings are available all year round.
