About Ma and Pa's

Ma and Pa's boasts some of the best views in Herefordshire. The charming period cottage dates from the 1600s and is a mix of stone and the black and white timber that is so characteristic of its time and this area. It is on Bradnor Hill, with elevated views over Offa's Dyke and the Brecon Beacons National Park. There are two double bedrooms to sleep up to four people, making it an idyllic retreat for couples or friends. The market town of Kington, with shops, cafes and pubs like the friendly Swan Hotel, is only a 10-minute walk away, and there are fantastic walks and bike rides from the gate.

Bradnor Hill is a favourite elevated footpath in Herefordshire, climbing 391 metres or 1283 feet from base to summit, although you're already halfway there when you stay at Ma and Pa's, since it's partway up the hill. The panoramic views from the top are sensational. There's nowhere more beautiful to enjoy a cup of tea as you watch the sunrise. Other excellent walks include those to Herrock Hill, Stanner Hill, Hanter Hill and Old Radnor Hill, as well as through Worsell Wood and Radnor Forest. There is also excellent scope for cycling and mountain biking with sweeping roads along the Welsh border, as well as good access to the Shropshire Hills, Malvern Hills, and the Wye Valley. Bradnor Hill also hosts the highest golf course in the country.

There's plenty to do when you stay at Ma and Pa's Cottage. Spend a day shopping and sightseeing in Hereford, making time to admire the gorgeous cathedral which houses the Mappa Mundi and a centuries-old chained library. Hereford has a great mix of independent shops and High Street stores, as well as a variety of pubs, restaurants and a cinema. Attractions include the Hereford Cider Museum, Black and White Museum, and street markets every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Alternative places for a leisurely day of browsing and eating include the book town of Hay-on-Wye, or Ludlow, with its castle and 16th Century black and white timber buildings packed with quirky shops and fantastic restaurants.

Other nearby attractions include Berrington Hall and Croft Castle, both of which are National Trust properties.

Location (Herefordshire)

Accommodation Comprises:

Ma and Pa's is a semi-detached period cottage in a rural location with no passing traffic. It is attached to the owner's home so they will be there to greet guests and help you settle in, but the cottage is entirely self-contained and private. Accommodation is over two levels.

  • Sitting room with stone walls, exposed beams, and a wood-burner in the original fireplace. The furnishings have a quaint vintage appeal and are comfortable and homely. There is a desk by the window in the sitting room in case visitors need to work while they are away, though they may find the stunning countryside distracting! The cottage has WiFi throughout.
  • Kitchen/diner with beautiful views overlooking the terrace and the garden. The antique table seats four people, while the kitchen is equipped with all the utensils, appliances, crockery and glasses required to self-cater.

  • Both bedrooms have comfortable double beds that are made up for guests' arrival. The main bedroom has lovely views.
  • Family bathroom with bath, WC and handbasin.

Outside: The cottage has a private terrace with lots of flowering plants and a table and chairs to sit and marvel at the scenery. There are usually sheep in the adjacent field, and the owner keeps free-range hens (and a cockerel) so you may hear them clucking and 'cock a doodle dooing' in their garden. The cottage is access via the lane to the common and then a track takes you from the common to the cottage - the track is bumpy and unmade but accessible by some vehicles. Alternatively, there is parking at the bottom of the hill. Guests may want to bring their wellies or walking boots and leave their fancy shoes for indoors.

Additional Information: Utilities, WiFi, fuel for the wood-burner, sheets and towels are provided. Short breaks (minimum of two nights) are possible depending on availability. Smoking and pets are not permitted, and the cottage is not suitable for children under 2 years of age.
