Porthmadog Haven is a welcoming holiday cottage in the heart of a beautiful harbour town in Snowdonia. The spacious four-bedroom home sleeps eight guests with ease and is excellent for big families, extended families or friends. Staying here means you're only a stroll from the harbour, cafes, shops, bars like the friendly Ship and Australia Pubs and The Port Restaurant as well as two of the highest rated ice cream parlours in Wales. Walking, mountain biking, sailing, golf, heritage houses, fantastic attractions are all within easy reach. Because the cottage is within walking distance of a mainline train station, you don't need to use your car if you'd prefer not to drive.
The first thing that will strike you about Porthmadog is the fantastic harbour. It's always busy with working boats or visitors who use it to berth while sailing along the Welsh coastline. Walking around the waterfront footpath to Borth-y-Bay is a good way to orient yourself with the town or sit and watch the world go by. The harbour is a popular launch spot for local Stand Up Paddleboaders, sailors as well as crabbing at high tide. A fun way to work off the calories from your chips or ice cream is to tackle Grisiau Mawr - a long flight of Grade II steps between the harbour and Garth Road. Alternatively, walk along The Cob - a long embankment from the harbour over the Glaslyn Estuary with fantastic views towards Portmeirion.
Porthmadog is a favourite with narrow-gauge train enthusiasts who have a choice of three heritage lines to ride. Climb aboard trains to Ffestiniog, Caernafon, or one of the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway timetable destinations. There is also a great railways museum with hands-on exhibits that shows the ingenuity of these machines. Outside of town, attractions include the highly decorative and colourful buildings of Portmeirion, two miles away. Spend a day on one of the area's many beautiful beaches, including Black Rock Sands and Morfa Bychan, or explore the nearby Llyn Peninsula and places like Criccieth beach and castle. Zip World Caverns and the Sygun Copper Mine are great for a rainy day. Llanberris and the base of Snowdon are just over half an hour's drive from the cottage. Mountain bikers are close to Coed-y-Brenin, and cyclists can follow the Lôn Ardudwy trail that goes for 24 miles between Llandecwyn and Barmouth.
