Sealladh-Mara is a lovely chalet in a quiet location at a popular holiday park within sight of Monreith Bay. The water here is so clean that it's not unusual to see dolphins or seals frolicking in the sea and walking by the water's edge is a favourite activity. Monreith Sands Holiday Park is family-owned and operated with many of the visitors treating it their home-away-from-home.
The West Coast of Scotland is stunning. The beach near Sealladh-Mara is renowned for its beautiful footpaths which pass rockpools, caves and harbours. Butcher's Cave is an excellent destination for a walk and popular with birdwatchers for the wealth of species that thrive here. It isn't only seals that thrive in the water. Luce Bay is renowned for the quality of its sea fishing, while anglers also rate the nearby Blandoch and Cree rivers for salmon and trout. For book lovers, Wigtown's famous book festival is held in early September, and into early October (a short drive away).
The Gulf Stream makes the climate sunny and mild - something which can surprise first-time visitors who may be expecting weather akin to the mist-covered mountains of the Highlands. Logan Botanic Garden is across the bay from Sealladh-Mara, with a collection of exotic plants from around the world that thrive in the near-tropical conditions. Visitors with green thumbs should also consider visiting Glenwhan Gardens and tea room, and Castle Kennedy which hosts concerts throughout the summer and has extensive gardens (including a garden centre selling plants), nature trails and a coffee shop.
Golf is another favourite pastime for both locals and visitors who enjoy a choice of excellent courses that include those at St Medan’s, Blandoch, Wigtown, Portpatrick Dunskey and Creachmore. If you are willing to drive a little further, then the links at Turnberry in Ayrshire and Royal Troon will tick two courses off your golfing bucket list.
Attractions within easy reach of Sealladh-Mara and the Monreith Sands Holiday Park include 7stanes mountain bike park at Kirroughtree, Creetown Gem Museum in Creetown, St Ninians Cave, the Monreith Animal World, Glenluce Abbey, the Galloway Forest Park, and Whithorn Museum.
