About Apple Tree Cottage

Apple Tree Cottage is in Chantmarle, which is possibly the most peaceful hamlet in all of Dorset. It's hard to picture a more charming setting than this whitewashed thatched cottage which sleeps up to six people in three bedrooms and is perfect for couples, families or friends. Chantmarle is part of a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, about a mile from the picturesque village of Cattistock and the Fox and Hounds pub.

The cottage was built over 100 years ago to house workers on the Chantmarle estate. The Grade-I listed manor house and pretty village church of St Marys are both within a short stroll. There's a well-stocked village shop in Cattistock with more amenities in nearby Maiden Newton. The county town of Dorchester is 14 miles and a 25-minute drive from Apple Tree Cottage, with a wide choice of places to eat, drink and shop. Dorchester has three supermarkets and a weekly market that runs every Wednesday from 8am to 1pm. Whether you want to eat out, collect a tasty takeaway, or buy local produce to cook back at the cottage, you'll find it here. Dorchester has several specialist museums dedicated to the local area, dinosaurs, teddy bears, Tutankhamun, and military history.

Chantmarle is part of what is known as Hardy Country, named in honour of the beloved English writer who immortalised the charm of the area in his poems and stories. Hardy was born and raised around Dorchester and is buried in the churchyard at St Michael's in Stinsford. The region is renowned for its beauty with miles of footpaths, bridleways and cycling routes. You can walk for miles and not see another soul or follow a route that links villages with historic buildings like Sherborne Abbey and Castle and welcoming country pubs.

Destinations for a day trip from Apple Tree Cottage can include the Jurassic Coast, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, all of which are just over half an hour's drive away. Other places to visit include the seaside resort of Weymouth, historic Bath, Glastonbury Abbey and Tor, and Cheddar Gorge. Apple Tree Cottage is peaceful and idyllic allowing you to fill your days with fun and excitement before returning to the tranquillity of your holiday home.

The cottage was built at the turn of the 20th Century and has gardens on all sides. Accommodation is over two levels with a traditional layout.


  • Pretty sitting room with a decorative fireplace, comfortable furnishings, a TV with a DVD player and Freeview channels, and garden views.
  • Separate dining with elegant antique furniture that suits the age of the property. It is at the rear of the cottage with views of the orchard and patio.
  • An archway separates the kitchen from the dining room, giving easy access without being open-plan. Solid oak cabinets are full of pots, pans, crockery, glasses and everything else guests need to cook and serve meals. A small table and chairs are ideal for relaxed meals and kitchen suppers. Appliances include a dishwasher and a washing machine.
  • Cloakroom with a WC and handbasin.
  • Twin bedroom with two single beds and ample storage.
  • Shower room with a shower, WC and a handbasin.


  • Master bedroom with a queen sized bed, bedside tables with reading lights, wardrobe, dressing table and a chest of drawers.

Outside: The cottage's grounds include an area of lawn, a patio with garden furniture, a small orchard, and a driveway with off-street parking for up to three cars. Dog owners please note that while the garden is gated, it is not securely enclosed.

Additional Information: WiFi, utilities, bed linen and towels are all provided. Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome through prior arrangement. A travel cot (no bedding) and highchair are available. The property is strictly non-smoking and candles are not permitted due to the thatched roof.
