About Nuthatch Cottage

Nuthatch is bursting with traditional Devon charm. Sleeping four people in two double bedrooms with the option to sleep two more on the comfortable sofa-bed, the cottage is perfect for couples and friends who want to stay somewhere special. Nuthatch is one of four outstanding self-catering cottages at Lea Hill which is just outside of Membury in the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Membury is an excellent choice for a self-catering holiday in Devon. The friendly village is peaceful and picturesque with an Iron Age fort, a 13th-Century Church and an annual festival that dates back to 1660 when the English monarchy was restored to the throne. There are thatched cottages, beautiful walks and rolling countryside views as far as the eye can see. Four miles away, the market town of Axminster has a good choice of shops and amenities (including the popular River Cottage Kitchen and Deli) together with museums and a minster whose bells used to be rung every time one of its famous carpets was completed.

Walking and cycling are both a fantastic way to get a feel for just how beautiful this part of Britain is, and there is certainly no shortage of opportunity to enjoy being outdoors. The Buzzard Route cycleway is only one of many dedicated cycle routes around the area where there are also miles of bridleways open to mountain bikers and hikers as well as equestrians. The East Devon Way and South West Coast Path are both fantastic for walkers, or you can simply step outside the cottage and stroll through nearby Hawkswood and Thurlbear Wood. The Axe Valley has a number of rivers which attract kingfishers and otters, and the UNESCO World Heritage Jurassic Coast is only half an hour's drive with miles of stunning beaches just waiting for you to set out your deckchair and enjoy the sunshine.

Devon attractions close to Nutbush include Forde Abbey, Bicton Park, Dinosaurland, Crealy Adventure Park, Escot, Beer Quarry Caves and the Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth. Whether you are visiting Devon as part of a longer holiday in the UK or enjoying the pleasure of a "staycation", there is no better place for relaxing with your family and friends.

Location (Devon)

Accommodation Comprises:

Nuthatch is a period cottage with original beams and stone walls that the owners have carefully incorporated into the stylish decor to show off its unique charm while ensuring it is comfortable for modern guests.

Downstairs:

  • Entry to the cottage is via the front garden and through a glass door into a welcoming dining area. Fitting with the age of the property, the dining table is antique with a warm patina created from generations of families eating meals together. This room has a comfortable sofa which opens into a double bed.
  • Walk through to the kitchen, where 21st-century appliances make light work of cooking everything from tea and toast to a three-course meal.
  • At the rear of the house, the dual aspect living room is light and spacious. Part of the original wall has been left exposed as a beautiful feature, contrasting perfectly with the soft cream sofa and armchairs. There is a TV and an electric "wood burner effect" stove for extra warmth and atmosphere on chilly winter evenings.
  • Coats and boots can be stored in the entrance hallway, off which leads a cloakroom with WC and handbasin.

Upstairs:

  • Stairs hidden behind a door in the dining room lead to the first floor where there are two ensuite bedrooms.
  • The bedroom at the front of the house features exposed beams, ample storage and lovely views of the garden. The owners have created a country-inspired haven which almost guarantees a good night sleep. The ensuite has a bath, WC and handbasin.
  • Another large double room is at the front of the house with windows looking out over the surrounding countryside. The ensuite has two entrances so it can also be used as a family bathroom. It has a bath, separate shower, WC and handbasin.

Outside: Nuthatch has an enclosed private garden with seating for relaxing and eating outdoors. Guests also have use of a large shared garden so there is ample space for children and pets to play. There is off-street parking.

Additional Information: Electricity is included with guests supplying sheets and towels. The cottage has oil-fired central heating which is charged at cost so that guests only pay for what they need. Up to four well-behaved dogs are welcome for a small surcharge. Nuthatch can be booked together with one or more of the three other holiday cottages at Lea Hill to sleep up to 16 guests. Smoking is not permitted.
