About Gitcombe House

Gitcombe House is huge, with space for 13 people to sleep in six bedrooms and a layout that suits large and extended families who enjoy 5* Gold standard accommodation. Guests love the elegant Georgian symmetry of this Grade II Listed manor farmhouse which has pride of place on the exclusive Gitcombe Estate in Cornworthy near Totnes. Eight self-catering holiday homes share 14 acres of private grounds and amenities, including indoor and outdoor heated swimming pools, play areas, a tennis/basketball court, games room, and a steam room and sauna. The magnificent Dart Estuary is on the doorstep, and the beautiful beaches of South Devon are within easy reach.

Cornworthy is south of Dartmoor National Park, surrounded by the South Devon Area of Natural Beauty with ancient green lanes linking you to the gorgeous South Hams countryside. The welcoming village pub, the Hunter's Arms, is just over a mile from the Gitcombe Estate and a wonderful destination if you feel like a gentle walk. Totnes is the closest town. As well as a great choice of shops and places to eat and drink, Totnes has a regular farmers' market on the third Sunday of the month where you can shop for local food and drink from the people who produce it. Dartmouth is an excellent alternative to Totnes for shopping and dining out. It's seven miles or around a 15-minute drive from Gitcombe House and has a farmers market on the second Saturday of the month. It doesn't matter if you're not around for these markets as you're staying within half an hour's drive of no fewer than six farm shops, two vineyards, and seven breweries. Why wouldn't you opt for a self-catering holiday here, with so much delicious food and drink to enjoy?

Blackpool Sands is around a 15-minute from the house. Widely regarded as one of the best beaches in Devon for its sandy beach, pine trees and clean water, the Blue Flag beach is a favourite with families for its sheltered conditions and amenities that include sandpits, watersport equipment hire, a cafe, and seasonal lifeguards. Other local beaches are Strete Gate, Broadsands, Slapton Sands, and secluded coves like Mattiscombe Beach. There's plenty to do away from the coast with local attractions such as Woodlands Family Theme Park, Paignton Zoo, and the Dartmouth Steam Railway and River Boat to keep you occupied. The English Riviera is half an hour's drive, or you can go wild on Dartmoor.

Gitcombe House is completely private and self-contained, with beautiful gardens and lots of space for families and friends. Holiday bookings are available all year round.

Gitcombe House is a Grade-II Listed Georgian property with beautiful period features and furnishings that suit the age of the house while being practical and comfortable for 21st Century lifestyles.

Downstairs:

  • Elegant pillars lead to the front door and the entrance hall, which has flagstones and space to hang coats. An original staircase curves up to the first floor.
  • With 25 square metres of space, there is room for everyone to relax in the living room. Settle back on a comfortable sofa with the fire lit and a favourite film on the 47-inch digital TV, or admire views of the garden and estate's grounds through tall sash windows.
  • There's a smaller snug with a sofa, TV and DVD player where the kids can have their choice of films or adults can sneak away for some quiet time to read.
  • Even simple meals will feel like a celebration when eaten in the formal dining room with its mahogany dining table, French chandelier, open fireplace, deep red walls and picturesque garden views.
  • Large windows, original flagstones, and a scrubbed pine table create a relaxed country vibe in the kitchen/breakfast room. There's a traditional Aga range cooker and a modern electric oven and stove, an American-style fridge/freezer, a Nespresso coffee machine, and a wide range of equipment and utensils.
  • Laundry and cleaning facilities are in the separate utility room next to the kitchen.
  • Guests who prefer to avoid stairs can stay in the twin bedroom furnished with two full-sized single beds and a bedside table.
  • A shower room with a drench head shower, WC and a handbasin is next to the downstairs bedroom.

Upstairs:

  • Master bedroom with a super king sized sleigh bed and ample storage. The ensuite has a bath with a shower attachment, WC and a handbasin. It's a large room with tall sash windows and space for a cot. Please let the owners know if you'll need this when booking.
  • Triple/family room with a standard layout of three single beds or, with two weeks notice, one superking bed and one single bed. There's a massive wardrobe, a decorative fireplace, and a TV.
  • Twin room with two single beds, storage and a TV. The beds can be configured as one superking-sized bed. Please let the owners know your preferred layout when booking.
  • Large bedroom with a superking-sized forged iron bed, storage, and space for a cot.
  • Double room with a king-sized mahogany sleigh bed, bedside tables with reading lights, a decorative cast iron fireplace, and storage.
  • Family bathroom with a period-style cast-iron slipper bath, walk-in shower, original fireplace, WC and a handbasin.
  • Separate toilet with the original "Thunderbox" WC.

Outside: Gitcombe House has enclosed private gardens to the front and rear with lawns, a seating area and a barbecue. There is parking for 2-3 cars next to the cottage. Onsite amenities include indoor and outdoor swimming pools, indoor and outdoor play areas, and 14 acres of grounds for walks and picnics.

Additional Information: Utilities, WiFi, bed linen (not cot bedding) and bath towels are included. Guests to bring beach towels and cot bedding if required. Pets and smoking are not permitted.
