About Colby Cottage

Colby Cottage is a dream holiday cottage in South Devon. Set in a secluded spot in the beautiful South Hams, it feels wonderfully remote and peaceful yet is within walking distance of the friendly Ashburton Arms pub and within easy reach of stunning beaches and rolling countryside. With space for up to four people in two bedrooms, it is ideal for couples and families.

Colby Cottage is one of six fantastic self-catering properties at West Charleton Grange, each furnished to a high standard to ensure guests feel comfortable and welcome from the moment they arrive. Guests have the use of all of West Charleton Grange's facilities, which include a heated indoor swimming pool, separate indoor games room, children's play area, and extensive grounds that include a Victorian walled garden. The cottage can be booked on its own for couples or small families, or together with one or more of the other properties to accommodate a South Devon getaway with your extended family and friends.

Your perfect day at Colby Cottage could include waking up late and enjoying a lazy breakfast on your private terrace before packing the car with all the beach essentials such as a beach tent and a bucket and spade, which the owner kindly provides for guests to use during their stay. Spend the day at nearby Bantham Beach or Bigbury Bay, from where you can take the sea tractor across to Burgh Island, or take the ferry from vibrant Salcombe to the laid-back beach at East Portlemouth.

Alternatively, jump on your bike and cycle by the river through the Dartington Estate, stopping for a wild swim if it's hot and sunny. You may prefer to blow away winter cobwebs with a cliff-top walk along part of the 630-mile South West Coast Path or take to the water in a canoe or on a paddle board. Dartmoor National Park is just a 20-minute drive from the cottage, offering miles of unspoiled landscape for walking, cycling, horse riding and climbing, or perhaps you would like to spend a day sightseeing and shopping in historic Plymouth.

Everything you need for a relaxing holiday is right at your fingertips, even if that means you want to laze beside the pool with a good book or snooze in front of the log burning stove after a satisfying Sunday lunch. Whether you choose to do it all or prefer to do as little as possible, Colby Cottage is a perfect place to stay.

The owners of West Charleton Grange have taken great care to include everything guests could want for a relaxing self-catering holiday in the South Hams. Accommodation is over two floors, with the living area upstairs to make the most of the beautiful views.

Downstairs:

  • A good night's sleep awaits you in the master bedroom's comfortable king-sized bed with its Rest Assured bed, quality linen and blackout blinds. A built-in wardrobe and chest of drawers provide ample storage, and the ensuite includes a walk-in shower, WC and heated towel rail.
  • The second bedroom is a lovely twin with two full-sized single beds and stylish neutral decor that makes it ideal or child or adult guests. This room benefits from an ensuite with a bath and overhead shower, WC, handbasin and heated towel rail.

Upstairs:

  • A sense of light and space is one of the first things you will notice about the open-plan living area, followed quickly by the lovely views of the gardens and lake through the window. Two leather sofas and a log burner offer a perfect way to relax, and there is also a TV with a DVD player and Freeview channels. The cottage has WiFi throughout.
  • The dining room and kitchen feature lots of oak both on the floor and in the hand-crafted units which are topped by a granite worktop. The kitchen is stylish but practical, and a great place in which to cook.
  • A separate utility room houses a washer/dryer and a freezer if you need to keep a lot of food fresh.
  • There is a WC and handbasin as well as space to hang coats in the upstairs cloakroom.

Outside: Enjoy a cup of tea or a glass of wine as sit on your private patio and listen to the birds. Alternatively, take advantage of the estate's wood-burning pizza oven or barbecue to create something extra delicious. The indoor swimming pool is heated to a comfortable temperature all year round, and the owners kindly provide pool towels for guests to use during their stay. The shared grounds are extensive, including a level grassy area for playing ball games, children's play area, lake (fenced) and a walled garden with fruit trees. There is a separate building with games and an additional space called The Folly that is ideal for entertaining larger groups and which has a projector and screen for film nights.

Additional Information: All utilities, WiFi, sheets, and beach and bath towels are included. Colby Cottage is dog-friendly and up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome out of high season. The owners can provide a high chair, travel cot and stair gate if required - please ask when booking. Smoking is not permitted.
