About April Cottage

April Cottage offers a wonderful opportunity to stay in a genuine Devon thatched cottage. It was built in around 1650, and you can feel the centuries of welcome as you cross the threshold of the cottage, which is just outside the centre of Colyton and only a few minute's walk from three great pubs including The Kingfisher. There is space for up to six people to stay in three bedrooms, making April Cottage ideal for a family holiday in Devon that features the best of the coast and the countryside.

Colyton is a friendly village with a community who is happy to welcome visitors. Amenities include three excellent pubs, a variety of shops that feature an award-winning butcher and a brewery (there is also a Tesco's three miles away). You might see the colourful Seaton Tram as it passes through the Axe Valley, and you can climb aboard at Colyton tramstop to enjoy the beautiful scenery from the open-top carriage. There are some fantastic country walks that really show the countryside to its best advantage. A favourite goes via Heaththayne, Ox Hill and The Ridgway, giving great views of both the Coly Valley and the sea.

Speaking of the sea, April Cottage is perfectly located for exploring the Jurassic Coast, which has UNESCO World Heritage Site status thanks to its geological importance. In addition to all the usual activities you can enjoy on a day at the seaside, the Jurassic Coast has several places, such as Charmouth and Lyme Regis, where you can hunt for fossils and find your own prehistoric treasures.

Guests have a choice of fantastic beaches around ten minutes from the cottage. Beer is a particular favourite with families thanks to its sheltered location and selection of cafes next to the beach. Most of the coast around this area is shingle, with other nearby beaches including Branscombe, Seaton and Sidmouth. If you want to feel sand between your toes, the sandy beach at Lyme Regis’s picturesque Cobb is very popular with its traditional beach huts and the stunning views along the Jurassic Coast to Golden Cap.

There is no shortage of attractions around April Cottage, both natural and man-made. You can walk or cycle around the Blackdown Hills AONB (there is a well-established bike shop in Colyton where you can hire bikes if you do not have your own) or spend a day walking around the historic cathedral city of Exeter. Drive north around the coast to the sandy seaside resort of Weymouth, or go south, past Dartmoor National Park into Cornwall to the Eden Project or National Maritime Aquarium in Plymouth.

No matter how much they love spending time with each other, a family holiday can still be stressful for parents. April Cottage's peaceful location close to beaches and countryside walks, together with its lovely garden and comfortable interior, mean that everyone can relax and have fun.
