1906 The Reading Rooms sleeps four guests in two double bedrooms (plus two bathrooms!) and is a cosy welcoming holiday cottage, sitting in the peaceful Devonshire village of Chillaton, close to the edge of the Dartmoor National Park. Formerly the village hall and Edwardian reading rooms, the cottage has much character and is a good choice for couples who like a little extra space around them, families and friends wanting to get away together.
Chillaton nestles amongst beautiful countryside and provides the perfect base for enjoying not only all that Dartmoor has to offer but also the north and south coasts of Devon, along with the Tamar Valley. The village is reported to have been the home of Sir France's Chichester, the famous explorer who was the first of his kind to sail around the world single-handedly.
The historic market town of Tavistock is a short car ride away offering a good range of shops, pubs, leisure centre, riverside park and its famous Pannier Market where you can stock up on local produce.
With plenty of attractions, the local area offers lots of things to see and do. Walk from the cottage to the village of Brentor with its magnificent church set up high and stunning views. Lydford Gorge is another popular attraction closeby with its beautiful walks through the woodland and splendid water fall. Spend your days exploring Dartmoor's pretty villages by car or bike where you will find award winning farm shops, farmers markets and traditional pubs; or head to either coast for a day by the sea. There are also plenty of opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts whether your passion is walking, horse riding, cycling (the Granite Way, Drakes and Tarka Trails are all nearby) or fishing - the choices are endless.
For those happy to travel a little further afield, there are National Trust houses and gardens and world famous attractions including the Eden Project and Lost Gardens of Heligan.
