About The Bird Box

Are you looking for a romantic retreat with a difference? A few nights away that will be truly unforgettable? Then look no further. The Bird Box offers couples the opportunity of complete seclusion where you can tuck yourself away in this unique little love nest for two and enjoy a few nights of magic and escapism.

Nestling in a sheltered woody position, this bijou fairy-tale cabin has been designed to give the appearance of a bird box perched amongst the trees and offers self-catering accommodation for two with an immense amount of charm and wow factor.

Tuck yourself away from everyone and enjoy a few days of peace and solitude if your heart desires or use this magical retreat as a unique and fun base from which to explore the Dartmoor National Park and its many attractions. One thing is for sure, once you have visited, you will have memories to last a lifetime!

The Bird Box offers all the right ingredients for a truly unforgettable romantic holiday. A peaceful private haven with only the sound of birdsong to interrupt you and the cosiest of interiors with relaxing pastel shades, gorgeous fabrics, chunky wood and a kitchen for rustling up meals when feeling peckish. There is also a hot tub where you can bubble the night away amongst the twinkling candlelit trees (private sessions in the hot tub can be booked with the owner).

For those who are happy to leave the nest, the surrounding area offers a great choice of amenities to cater for all your needs. Next door is the old railway station where you can take a nostalgic trip on a steam train or visit the cafe which serves fantastic meals from a hearty English breakfast that will set you up for the day to a fine Devonshire afternoon tea. Hire a bike (or bring your own) and explore the Granite Way where you can enjoy a gentle cycle ride to Tavistock alongside the old railway line. Or for those feeling energetic, visit Adventure Okehampton (three minutes away) with over twenty exciting activities including horse riding, adventures for mountain bikers, gorge walking, caving and water based activities including kayaking and river rafting.

The surrounding area offers lovely walks and within just five minutes on foot you will find yourself on the northern edge of Dartmoor National Park. The old tram line that runs past the garden is also very popular taking walkers from Okehampton through meadows, woods and alongside the river up on the moor.

Okehampton town with its farmer’s market has much to offer and will cater for all your needs with three supermarkets (including Waitrose), cinema and a host of independent shops. There are also a great choice of places to enjoy a meal out including pubs and cafes. Sitting in the very heart of Devon, Okehampton provides easy access (within an hour's drive) to the north and south coastlines which both have their own unique character and charm. You can be in Exeter in thirty minutes by car, Cornwall in just twenty and there are many National Trust properties to visit along with world famous attractions including The Eden project (just an hour away by car).

Three night short breaks available all year - unfortunately a discount is not offered for two nights

Accommodation:

The Bird Box is a wonderfully cosy bolthole for those who want to immerse themselves in tranquility, nature and each other. Downstairs is a simple kitchen area equipped with everything you should need for preparing and enjoying meals including a microwave, fridge, kettle, toaster and small cooker (with oven, grill and two rings). There is a table where you can enjoy a romantic supper and veranda which is perfect for a glass of wine in the sunshine whilst listening to the sounds of the birds and river which runs way down below - a pleasant place to sit and enjoy the views from up high over the tree tops and parkland below where children play.

Exceptionally pretty and welcoming with neutral relaxing shades, beautifully complemented by country gingham's, bunting and a coal effect electric heater, chunky wooden stairs take you up to the restful bedroom. With a king-size bed adorned with scatter cushions, perfectly positioned so that you can kick open the French doors to let the outside and sunlight flood in, this is the perfect place to enjoy your morning tea whilst planning your day ahead.

At the end of the day, relax in the Canadian cedar hot tub which sits under the trees as they twinkle under candlelight - what better place for star gazing or wildlife spotting (you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of foxes, an array of vocal birds, squirrels and even deer) and a dead cert for relaxing even the most stressed of individuals!

Additional facilities: The bedroom has an en-suite which, like the rest of the accommodation has its own quirky rustic charm with tin shower, feeding trough as a wash basin and WC.

Additional information: The owner specialises in unique self-catering experiences so if someone is already nesting in The Bird Box, why not hire Moonbeam, a truly romantic yurt for two at the same location. Please note that all guests (and the owners) have the shared use of the hot tub but private sessions can be arranged via the owner. The Bird Box has electric heating throughout making it cosy all year round. Electricity, heating and towels are included in the price.
