About Humble Bee

Humble Bee would be an incredible place to stay no matter where it was, but when you add a beautiful woodland setting on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, you have a romantic holiday retreat that is quite simply perfect. Whether you are celebrating a special occasion or just want to tuck yourself away for a weekend of pure escapism and magic, Humble Bee will not dissapoint. This incredible human-size beehive offers a truly unique self-catering experience and feels wonderfully isolated surrounded by peaceful woods, yet it is only half a mile from the centre of the vibrant market town of Okehampton.

Ingeniously designed, this fairy-tale beehive is buzzing with wow-factor from the outdoor steaming bath where you can sip champagne whilst you soak amongst the trees, to the king-size bed that gives the illusion of being suspended from the ceiling. Adorned with fur throws and cushions, this cosy little hive even has a honeycomb wall and is just the sweetest of places to spend a few romantic nights away!

If you can tear yourself away from the tranquility and magic of the Humble Bee, The Old Railway Station is a hop, skip and a buzz away with its excellent cafe serving hearty breakfasts, lunch and afternoon tea. From here you can take a nostalgic trip on a steam train or hire a bike to explore the area under your own steam.

Slightly further (still under a ten minute walk) is the centre of Okehampton. On the northern tip of Dartmoor National Park it is a lively place with great amenities that include pubs, cafes, restaurants, a cinema, the Museum of Dartmoor Life, and a vintage steam train museum. The ruins of the castle, which is the oldest in Devon, enjoy an elevated position with lovely views over the town and surrounding countryside. Being able to stroll to such a wide range of amenities and attractions means that you can be as spontaneous and flexible about your plans as your heart desires. There is also a train station here with trains arriving from Exeter every hour making Humble Bee the perfect retreat for guests who want to leave their cars at home.

Whatever time of year you visit, getting outside and exploring the incredible scenery is a must. There are footpaths to suit all abilities and energy levels, from the four-mile circuit that passes over the Meldon Viaduct, to the challenging 24-mile Two Castles Trail between Okehampton and Launceston. The Humble Bee sits almost on top of the Granite Way cycle path (bikes can be hired locally) and the West Devon Way runs near Okehampton, while nearby Adventure Okehampton offers gorge scrambling, climbing, canoeing and abseiling.

Dotted around north Dartmoor are lovely villages and towns like Hatherleigh, with its charming cottages made from cob and thatch, and Sticklepath, where two pubs, two cafes and a thriving village store make the village a good place for lunch. Humble Bee is so wonderfully unique that your time here will leave you with incredible memories of an unforgettable romantic getaway in Devon.

Three night short breaks available all year - unfortunately a discount is not offered for two nights

Accommodation Comprises:

Humble Bee has been skilfully created by its artistic owner, with expert craftsmanship visible everywhere. Accommodation is spread over three mezzanine style floors with a clever layout that divides the space and allows for privacy without blocking the amazing views and connection with nature.

The interior is a blend of reclaimed wood, copper, steel and cast iron, and is furnished with sumptuous fabrics to create what feels like a treehouse for grown-ups.

  • Double doors open onto the woodland garden and the living area has a spacious daybed where you can both relax and listen to the birdsong.
  • The bespoke kitchen is perfectly formed and well-equipped for self-catering. The large wooden table is as comfortable for a relaxed brunch as it is for a romantic candlelit supper, or sit outside on your own private terrace for an alfresco meal.
  • A mezzanine living area has a sofa and cosy flame heater giving a warm glow to snuggle up in front of - a lovely place to sit and talk or just enjoy the sense of being cocooned away from the rest of the world.
  • The private shower room has a shower, WC and hand basin.
  • A stunning outdoor stone bath is entirely private and utterly luxurious. Lie back and soak tired muscles as you sip champagne without a care in the world.
  • The king-sized bed is tucked away at the top of the cabin, bringing all your childhood treehouse dreams into beautiful reality.

Prices: A nightly rate of £120 - £190 per night is charged with three night minimum breaks accepted all year round.

Additional information: The owner specialises in unique self-catering experiences so if someone has been a busy bee and booked this gorgeous beehive before you, why not take roost in The Bird Box just perfect for love birds, or Moonbeam, a truly romantic yurt for two at the same location. Please note that the owners have a hot tub that is available for guests shared use and private sessions can often be arranged via the owner. Prices include utilities, bed linen and towels. Sorry but no dogs!
