Dog friendly Dartmoor

Whether you are looking for well-marked footpaths or miles of unspoilt wilderness, the large number of walks on Dartmoor makes it a fantastic place to bring your dog on holiday. The spectacular four-mile riverside walk along the Teign Gorge from the impressive Castle Drogo is breathtakingly beautiful. Aside from the stunning views across the valley, the carpets of spring daffodils and bluebells and the autumnal jumping salmon and the brown trout are both sites not to be missed. And neither is a well-deserved lunch beside the river at the dog friendly Fingle Bridge Inn. Alternatively take a gentle stroll through the wildflower woodlands along the River Bovey. You will find impressive waterfalls and ancient woodland trails at one of the main tributaries at Becky Falls.

If you are looking to get out on the moors, one of the most accessible walks is up Hound Tor. You can extend your walk to include the nearby Saddle Tor, Haytor Rocks and Howell Tor. Not only will you be rewarded with stunning views across the moors and beyond to the coast but you can also explore the remains of a deserted medieval village. Alternatively clamber up to the tiny parish church that sits at the top of the rocky outcrop at Brent Tor which creates a striking silhouette on the Dartmoor horizon. If you enjoy a good story you will be fascinated by the legends of the local ghosts, witches and dragons that haunt these ancient moors and Tors.

If you want to combine myths and legends with Vikings and Normans head to the National Trust’s Lydford Gorge. Be wowed by the Whitelady Waterfall, enjoy the depths of the Devil’s Cauldron and explore the caves and gullies of this deep gorge. There are a number of circular walks to stretch your four-legged friend’s legs before visiting one of the dog friendly tea rooms.

If you and your dog fancy a dip head to Spitchwick Common. This large grassy area which runs along the River Dart is the perfect spot for a picnic followed by a wild swim. Adventure seekers will love jumping off the cliffs into the deep channel of water, or use the giant granite steps for a more sedate entrance. If you want a walk to dry off and warm up you can follow the Two Moors Way from here through the woodlands to Leigh Tor.

If you are looking for a day of family fun and adventure set in beautiful and tranquil surroundings head to Canonteign Falls. Test the kids’ metal on the zip wire and mini assault course, sail out to sea on the huge wooden ship in the children’s play area or find fairies in the magical fern garden. Dogs will love exploring one of the wildlife walks in the 90 acres of ancient woodland and everyone will enjoy the delicious homemade produce in the lakeside café.

Whether you are looking for somewhere to stay with walks from the front door, stunning panoramic views, or just a cosy pub at the end of the lane, the large number of dog friendly cottages to rent makes Dartmoor a top doggie destination to go on holiday.
