About Old Mill Barn

Old Mill Barn is a delightful stone barn conversion which accommodates large parties of up to ten guests in five bedrooms, and provides the perfect place for friends and families to holiday together, enjoy a weekend away catching up or celebrate a special occasion.

Comfortable and welcoming at any time of the year, Old Mill Barn has a lovely garden for relaxing in the summer months and open-plan living with a wonderful sense of space, five bedrooms and an impressive stone fireplace with log burner for cosy winter breaks.

Conveniently located, the barn sits in the beautiful Eden Valley in the conservation village of Gamblesby at the foot of the Pennine Hills, and is just twenty minute's drive from the M6 (junction 40). Within just half an hour you can be exploring the many attractions of the Lake District National Park or head to the Scottish Border towns, Hadrian's Wall, Gretna Green for the romantics amongst you, and Carlisle with its castle, cathedral and great shops - all under an hour away.

Peaceful and tucked away, Gamblesby dates back to medieval times and offers the opportunity of enjoying a tranquil haven whilst still being able to visit the areas abundance of attractions. For those who prefer to stay locally, there are plenty of things to see and do in the Eden Valley. Spend your days walking and enjoy riverside walks (and fly fishing) alongside the River Eden as it makes its way to the Solway Firth. Cycling is another popular pursuit in the area whether you prefer leisure cycling along the lanes or the adventures of off-road. For those looking for adventure, there is a gliding centre four miles from the barn. Golf and horse riding are also available locally.

Relatively undiscovered and definitely unspoilt, you can enjoy a relaxed pace of life with interesting little shops to explore, tea rooms for refreshment and welcoming pubs for lazy lunches. Whilst the village itself does not have a pub, nearby Melmerby is only a twenty minute walk where you will find the Shepherds Inn serving good meals and guest ales. There is also a village shop for provisions in Melmerby, as well as a shop in nearby Langwathby and another pub (The Fox) at Ousby.

For those looking for larger shops, a trip into nearby Penrith will provide a good choice of supermarkets and plenty of opportunities for stocking up on provisions, including local produce at the monthly Farmer's Market and Artisan Market.

The Old Mill Barn dates back one hundred and fifty years and offers accommodation split across two floors comprising:

Downstairs

  • Two twin bedrooms.
  • One double bedroom - all rooms have clothes storage space.
  • Shower room with WC, wash basin and walk-in shower.

Upstairs

  • Open-plan living with three distinct areas: sitting area with comfy seating, Freeview television, DVD player, CD player and lovely log burner in a big impressive stone fireplace making a wonderful feature; dining area with table and ten chairs; and kitchen which is well equipped with double oven, hob, dishwasher, microwave, washing machine, fridge/freezer, additional fridge and plenty of crockery, cutlery, glassware, pots and pans. Basically everything needed to self-cater! A door provides access outside to the garden with patio for relaxing in the warmer months.

  • A perfect place for the children to play whilst the adults relax, or for adults to sneak off for a quiet moment with a good book. Seats and hi-fi are provided for guests relaxation.

Outside: The gardens are delightful at any time of the year but particularly during the summer when you can dine alfresco on the patio. There is a lawned area with stream (which cannot be accessed at the back but can be in the car parking area at the front) and lovely views over the surrounding countryside and Pennine Hills beyond.

Additional information: Short breaks (three night minimum) available most of the year - please enquire with the owner. Up to two well behaved dogs are welcome at an additional charge of £20. Bedlinen, heating and electricity included. Towels can be supplied at an additional charge of £2 per guest. Parking outside the front of the property. For little ones, a cot, high chair and stair gates are available upon request at the point of booking. Welcome logs (two bags) provided for the use of the log burner and additional bags can be purchased from the owner at £6 per bag. Please note: The stream at the front of the cottage, and the high retaining wall at the back can present a potential hazard for children, and parents need to ensure that children are aware of the danger and/or supervised.
