About Harry's Barn

Harry's Barn is in a fantastic location, sitting peacefully between the North Pennines and Lake District National Park in the Eden Valley, with sweeping countryside views. The 200-year old building has been sympathetically upgraded from a traditional Cumbrian field house to sleep four people in two bedrooms, with the owners carefully retaining the original features that give the building so much charm and character. It is ideal for couples or families with children over five years old, and is also dog-friendly. With all of this plus the Butchers Arms pub at Crosby Ravensworth being a comfortable 20-minute walk from the front door, it is no wonder Harry's Barn is popular.

The barn is on a quiet lane in Maulds Meaburn. The stone cottages, rolling countryside and pretty Lyvennet Beck which babbles its way south to join the River Eden belie the village's role in one of the bloodiest murders in history as, 900 years ago, the land belonged to one of the men who assassinated the Archbishop of Canterbury. Nowadays, the village is far removed from scandal and intrigue, offering beautiful walks beside the Lyvennet and across the moors to Crosby Ravensworth, passing a cairn said to be the final resting place of the legendary outlaw, Robin Hood. Howgills, the Pennines and the Lakeland Fells are all within easy reach, with Orton (home of the Kennedy Chocolate factory / shop / cafe which is very popular with guests), Great Ashby Scars and Sunbiggan Tarn also being nearby.

Slightly further afield but still within an hour's drive are Grizedale and Whinlatter Forests, Derwentwater, Ullswater and Windermere. There is certainly no shortage of fells to cross and hills to climb!

As enjoyable as walking and mountain biking through the Cumbrian countryside are, there is also ample opportunity to indulge in peaceful days exploring impressive country houses such as Sizergh Castle, Holker Hall, Levens and Mirehouse. The historic market town of Appleby, famous for its annual horse fair, is a short drive away, as are Orton and Kendal.

Harry's Barn is just a few miles from the Lake District National Park. It is perfect for guests who want to enjoy this breathtaking landscape without having to sacrifice peace and privacy.

Location (Cumbria)

Accommodation Comprises:

Harry's Barn was built in the late 1700s and retains many characteristics of Cumbrian buildings of this time, including thick stone walls, oak beams and, in some rooms, low ceilings. Accommodation is 4 Star Gold rated (by visit England and inspected annually) and upside down with the living area upstairs.

  • The open plan living/dining and kitchen area is a relaxed space with comfortable seating and a multifuel stove, for which the owners provide a welcome basket of logs and coal. There is an LCD television with a DVD player, and the cottage also has WiFi and a radio/CD player. The dining table seats four guests.
  • Kitchen area which has been cleverly designed to include everything you would expect from a 4-Star Gold standard self-catering cottage, including an oven and stove, microwave and a dishwasher, as well as a good variety of utensils, cooking equipment, crockery and cutlery.
  • Master bedroom with a king-sized bed with a wardrobe and chest of drawers for storage. Stone walls, exposed beams and soft lighting add to the room's quiet charm.
  • Second bedroom which is a small bunk room with 2ft 6in-wide bunk beds. A low ceiling means this room is only suitable for children aged between five and 15 years.
  • Bathroom with a bath with an overhead shower, WC and handbasin.

Outside: A gravel courtyard at the front of the cottage has a picnic table with benches and a parasol. The rest of the garden is enclosed, with fences of at least one metre high, and mainly lawn. Guests have private, off-street parking.

Additional Information: For safety reasons (due to the drop from the upstairs mezzanine should a child climb on the barrier), Harry's Barn is unsuitable for children under the age of 5. All utilities (including electric heating), towels and linen are included. Short breaks (minimum three nights) are possible, depending on availability, starting from £85 per night. Up to three well-behaved dogs are welcome with prior agreement from the owner and a surcharge. Smoking is not permitted.

Star Rating: 4 Star Gold
