About Barley Cottage

Barley Cottage sleeps three guests in two bedrooms and is perfectly placed where the picturesque Lake District and beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Parks meet the Trough of Bowland. With so much stunning countryside to explore, this is an ideal base for discovering the many attractions of Cumbria, North Yorkshire and Lancashire, and perfect for a walking holiday.

Whittington is a rural village just two miles from the attractive market town of Kirkby Lonsdale in the Lune Valley. It is recorded in the Doomsday Book with the parish Church dating back as far as 1538. The village is picturesque and tranquil with glorious, unspoilt countryside all around providing wonderful walks from the front door.

Kirkby Lonsdale is easily accessible via an enjoyable walk along the River Lune. The town offers a great choice of interesting shops, cafes, Norman church and restaurants, nicely set amongst cobbled courtyards and Georgian architecture. Visit on a Thursday to stock up on local produce at the market; enjoy fine dining or a fish and chip supper; stroll from Kirkby Lonsdale to admire the famous ‘Ruskin’s View’; or visit the 14th Century ‘Devil’s Bridge’ that straddles the River Lune - a popular tourist attraction.

Hutton Roof Crags Nature Reserve is another popular place to visit and just two miles from Kirkby Lonsdale with its unique limestone pavement. Within a twenty minute drive, you will find yourself encapsulated in the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales with plenty of attractions for all ages including Ingleton Caves and the famous Settle to Carlisle Railway - the perfect way to take in the scenery. Explore the 'Howgills', one of England's forgotten walking areas and a tranquil hidden gem. The nearby Forest of Bowland is also a 'must' for walkers.

Alternatively, head to the spectacular Lake District (just a thirty minute drive) where you will find a whole host of attractions including Windermere. Beach lovers can head to the coast and visit Lancashire's bays at Silverdale and Arnside (just twenty five minutes) or Morecambe Bay (thirty minutes). Shoppers have Booth’s nearby or the vibrant town of Kendal (twenty minutes drive) and nearby Lancaster. There is a golf course at nearby Casterton (open to the public) and the area offers plenty for those who enjoy cycling, fishing and horse-riding.
