The Old Signal House is all about location. Sitting up above the rocks over Penlee Point, the cottage overlooks Cawsand Bay. The views are quite simply stunning stretching along the Devon coastline as well as out across the ocean with nothing to spoil the view of the boats that regularly pass by.
It is number 1 of three terraced cottages built over a century ago to house the lighthouse keepers at Eddystone Lighthouse and gives guests a chance to play a role in this unique aspect of the area's history. The cottage is at the end of a private lane with no passing traffic to mar the sound of the waves. The beach is only a few steps (82 of them onto the headland) and easily walkable via the coastal footpath from pubs in Cawsand and Kingsand. With space for up to six people to sleep in three bedrooms, it is ideal for families of all ages.
Cornwall's riches are its beautiful beaches, and Penlee Point and the Rame Peninsula are certainly no exception. Great swathes of the coast are protected either as part of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) so the scenery is as unspoiled today as it was a century ago, when the original inhabitants of the cottage manned the lighthouse. Kingsand and Cawsand beaches both face east, and there's no better way to start your day than by watching the sunrise over the water. The beaches are sandy with rock pools, and conditions are typically good for kayaking, stand-up paddle-boarding and other watersports.
Take a day away from the beach and walk into Cawsand. Grab some lunch at a cafe or the pub before walking back to the cottage, or jump aboard the ferry to Plymouth and spend a relaxing few hours shopping and sightseeing in this lively waterfront city with its rich naval heritage and vibrant music scene. Alternatively, walk to Kingsand or around Mount Edgcumbe House's gardens and country park.
Local attractions include Smeaton's Tower, Dartmoor Zoo, the National Marine Aquarium and the Mayflower Steps in Plymouth and Tinside Lido. There are endless miles of footpaths, mountain bike trails and bridleways to explore, including through the nearby Penlee Battery Nature Reserve.
You'll never forget a holiday at The Old Signal House. Its incredible position means it has something to offer everyone in every season.
