About The Old Signal House

The Old Signal House is all about location. Sitting up above the rocks over Penlee Point, the cottage overlooks Cawsand Bay. The views are quite simply stunning stretching along the Devon coastline as well as out across the ocean with nothing to spoil the view of the boats that regularly pass by.

It is number 1 of three terraced cottages built over a century ago to house the lighthouse keepers at Eddystone Lighthouse and gives guests a chance to play a role in this unique aspect of the area's history. The cottage is at the end of a private lane with no passing traffic to mar the sound of the waves. The beach is only a few steps (82 of them onto the headland) and easily walkable via the coastal footpath from pubs in Cawsand and Kingsand. With space for up to six people to sleep in three bedrooms, it is ideal for families of all ages.

Cornwall's riches are its beautiful beaches, and Penlee Point and the Rame Peninsula are certainly no exception. Great swathes of the coast are protected either as part of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) so the scenery is as unspoiled today as it was a century ago, when the original inhabitants of the cottage manned the lighthouse. Kingsand and Cawsand beaches both face east, and there's no better way to start your day than by watching the sunrise over the water. The beaches are sandy with rock pools, and conditions are typically good for kayaking, stand-up paddle-boarding and other watersports.

Take a day away from the beach and walk into Cawsand. Grab some lunch at a cafe or the pub before walking back to the cottage, or jump aboard the ferry to Plymouth and spend a relaxing few hours shopping and sightseeing in this lively waterfront city with its rich naval heritage and vibrant music scene. Alternatively, walk to Kingsand or around Mount Edgcumbe House's gardens and country park.

Local attractions include Smeaton's Tower, Dartmoor Zoo, the National Marine Aquarium and the Mayflower Steps in Plymouth and Tinside Lido. There are endless miles of footpaths, mountain bike trails and bridleways to explore, including through the nearby Penlee Battery Nature Reserve.

You'll never forget a holiday at The Old Signal House. Its incredible position means it has something to offer everyone in every season.

Location (Cornwall)

Accommodation Comprises:

The Old Signal House is an end-terrace cottage with far-reaching views over Plymouth Sound from the garden and most windows. Accommodation is over two levels. As the house is built into a slope, entry is on the ground floor into the living room, with the kitchen and dining room on the lower ground floor.

Ground Floor:

  • Light grey, white and natural wood tones make the living room a calm and relaxing place to sit and read, watch a film or chat over a glass of wine after a day filled with fun and adventure. Dual aspect windows make the most of the incredible views - it's easy to lose an hour just watching the boats and trying to spot seals, dolphins and even the occasional submarine.
  • Sleep like a baby in the master bedroom which has a kingsized bed and more amazing ocean views. The colour scheme from the living room flows throughout the house, echoing the natural surroundings. The bedroom has proper storage and a choice of books.
  • Adjoining the master bedroom is the family bathroom where there is a shower over the bath, a WC and a handbasin.
  • A second double bedroom has zip-link beds that can either be two single beds or one super-kingsized bed, depending on your requirements. This room has a chest of drawers, built in wardrobe and views of the garden. A fresh modern ensuite has a shower, WC and a handbasin.
  • The third room has adult-sized bunk beds, views of the clifftop and the ocean, and a tiled ensuite with a shower, WC and a handbasin.

Lower Ground Floor:

  • You'll love cooking meals in this stunning kitchen which is fitted with high-quality stainless steel appliances and includes plenty of storage space and an integrated dishwasher. The window looks out over the terrace to Plymouth Sound.
  • Downstairs is one long open-plan space separated by a staircase. The dining room also has fantastic sea views as well as a long table with seating for six and a bookcase with a variety of books.

Outside: The exterior of the cottage is as impressive as the interior, especially the roof terrace which is reached via a spiral staircase and affords guests with uninterrupted, 360 degree views. There is a patio on the ground floor level which is fenced and has a table and chairs, and a level area of lawn past that. There is a private car park (82-steps above the house).

Additional Information: All utilities, WiFi, bed linen and bath towels are provided. Well-behaved dogs are welcome with the owner's prior agreement. Please check before booking. Short breaks may be possible depending on availability. Smoking is not permitted.
